That pastors will be thrown in jail for preaching against homosexuals if a certain bill is passed in Congress:

Could some good Christians please show me in here where it makes it a crime to preach against homosexuality?

Because they either 1) don't bother to read the bill or 2) they prefer to believe the lies spread by others because it makes their persecution complex feel so good.

ADDENDUM

davidm: Exactly how does your sermon purport to answer the question?

Trish: You need to go back to Civics class. "The people" do not vote on federal bills. If Congress passes it and the President signs it, it becomes law. Period.

A lot of Christians these days get off on the thought that they're being discriminated against or persecuted for their beliefs. Real legislation designed to protect the beliefs of others from having Xianity shoved down their throats (such as the prayer in school stuff) is used as an example of how the poor little Xian is trodden on.

Couple that with the fact that people will believe anything if the email subject is "FW:FW:FW:FW:FW:FW You won't believe this!", and you have a recipe for disaster.

That is just retarded! First of all the constitution gives us the right to free speech and freedom of religion, so it couldn't be a crime. Second just because a bill is passed does not mean that it will be made into a law, the public would still have to vote. And I don't even think that this could even become a bill considering the fact that it is unconstitutional and would be vetoed before it would ever get any further. This is not something that I have ever heard of a Christian spreading, this sounds like something that an uneducated person would say, whether they were a Christian or not.

first off, after reading through snopes.com/politiccs/sexuality, the link that you have provided, no where does the bill, state that pastors or anyone will be thrown in jail for PREACHING AGAINST HOMOSEXUALS. this is not a crime. after all, they are preaching what the gospel says, right? you can't take that Right away.

and i'm not saying that couldn't happen, it could....

however, the bill indicates anyone to harm one's race, beliefs, religion, etc. by PHYSICAL HARM, will be thrown into jail for10 years if convicted. i.e, harming someone physically hurting someone out of rage and violence bc one is a homosexual will be commited.

now, this is an interesting bill, though because people will probably use this within their advantage-against their offense, as a way of saying that they were not harmed physically, but mentally. and that's another case within it's own. and this will be protected with our rights of freedom of speech

I read the actual bill, and I don't get that from it at all. It's to amend title 18, section 13, of the US Code which would make it a "hate-crime" to cause severe bodily harm to someone because of their religion, sexual orientation, etc. For Pete's sake- it should be a crime to "blow-up" anyone with an incendiary device just because of their religion or sexual orietation. Whats the problem here?

It is trick of rhetoric going back thousands of years. When you cannot refute your opponents argument on merit, you make up something you can refute, and then claim repeatedly at the top of your lungs that he said that instead. It's like when the Supreme Court ruled that it was illegal to force non-Christians to participate in Christian services in public schools, or to use public schoolrooms as venues for proselytizing, and the Christians started the lie that the Supreme Court had banned prayer in schools.

So far it isn't a crime to preach from the Holy Bible in the United States.

Cause many of them are insane fear manipulating monsters.

They would say this, then not demand that the people that molest little kids go to jail - just pay a little bit of money.

Why would they hate gay people and support child molesters? That's what I want to know.

Man. That urban legend is almost as silly as the "Madeline Murray O'Hair is trying to stop all Christian broadcasting" one that I heard in the 1970's when I was in High School.

Unfortunately, many of my brethren don't know about Snopes.com

Because it is a urban legend. You act as if only Christians are susceptible to being duped by these.
