We think my little brothers mole might be a birthmark. He is having it removed tommorow by a laser. Will it really scar him badly if it's a birthmark? Also, Are scars usually noticeable by people?

if the doctor is competent, then there shouldn't be any scars.

WHY is your 'little' brother having this mole 'removed' by laser surgery? Is the 'dermatologist' who is doing this a 'reputable surgeon' and does he know how to 'identify' a mole as potentially cancerous, since he doesn't seem to 'know for a fact' whether it is a mole or a 'birthmark'? I would tell your parents NOT to take their son to this doctor ... if there is a good 'reason' to want this 'mark' removed, they should go to a good UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL and talk to a 'teaching dermatologist' who knows what he's doing, and 'what to look for.' Whoever is scheduled to do your brother's 'laser surgery' is NOT a 'qualified dermatologist' and may not even be a 'good doctor.' Yes, 'scars' are noticeable, but they do 'fade' over time unless they are 'big enough' to show forever. Yes, if it's a 'birthmark' your brother could be 'scarred' ... but he could be 'scarred' even if it's a mole. What concerns me is that the DOCTOR doesn't seem to 'know' and there are very EASY ways to tell the difference between a mole and a birthmark.

Depends on the size really. It will also probably depend on your brothers skin type, some people heal very well with no trace of a scar, others not so well. My friends that have had moles removed dont have much of a scar, nothin that a little sun tan wont cover up anyway. I don't think the scar will depend on whether it is a birthmark or a mole.

Depends on how big it is and how good the dermatologist is. The smaller it is, the better the chance of no noticeable scar.

It only depends on your brother's skin tissue and molecular structure of the cells. If he's not-so-hyper-sensitive, he'll have no scars whatsoever, but if he had skin or blood problems in the past, it could be an issue.

There'll be a little "pink" mark there, for awhile, but as far as "scars" go- it WON'T be particularly noticeable. :)
