Had to laugh. That's a good question. The helmet was a flight helmet, made of leather. It retained heat like a full head hat for high elevation flying. Plus it contained ear phones and a throat microphone (strapped on after the helmet was put on) with all the wiring contained in the helmet. It was more for warmth than it was head protection.

It gets mighty cold up there, those fur lined helmets kept their head warm

It provides a sense of safety for them until they are dead. Plus they needed to comunicate with their base for directions. Pretty stupid people if you asked me but their beliefs are different and they can keep them out of America.

Normally I thought they wore a prayer scarf around their heads.
