Medicare and Medicaid cover Hospice as well as private insurance. My mother is a Hospice nurse. She is supposed to be part-time but works 70 hours a week and drives 150 miles a day. There is a shortage of nurses in Florida and she would have her pick of a number of less demanding, better paying positions. She does it because she loves it and is blessed by doing it and you better believe that the people in Hospice all do it for the same reason. It takes a special calling to work with the dying to provide care for terminal patients in the comfort of their own homes.

Hospise is normally paid for by your insurance company. Hospice is a business, so they're trying to make money just like every other busines. Hospice care involves chaplain visits, in-home health care by visiting nurses (VNA's), and the work of social workers, as well as the doctor on staff. However, insurance companies will normally only pay for hospice if the physician in charge of the patient's care can honestly say that the patient will be dying within the next six months. Hospice care is very expensive and I have seen cases of people's insurance companies refusing to pay since the patient lived beyond the six month time limit. All insurance companies may not be the same though.

Alternatively I suppose you could pay for hospice out of pocket, but as I said before it is quite expensive. A lot of people that are in hospice have medicare/medicaid, so your tax dollars are actually paying for it as well.

I hope this helps.

Medicare, Medicaid and most private insurances and HMO's. Many Hospices raise money to cover those people who don't have insurance. So, if you know of someone who could benefit by it, call your local hospice, or, talk to your doctor and have him make a referral. It does require a doctor's referral and it is for the last 6 months of a person's life. The hospice can also call the doctor for a referral.
