Id recommend 2 weeks before trying, as it can irritate the piercing and cause a lot of problems.
Use a decent motuh wash, if its something like listerene, dilute it down with water.
Avoid anything that will catch it for the first week or so.
Good luck
PS Whoever said that it interferes with you speech, it only happens in very few cases, if you have a lisp then it wont exactly help the matter, I wear a 5mm thick (4ga) barbell in my tongue and my speech is exactly the same as without it in.

I have had my tongue pierced 3 times (had to remove it twice before because of different jobs) and all 3 times I started brushing it straight away, that same night, just being careful to avoid brushing too close to the post.
As soon as you can tolerate pulling on the post a little bit without it being excrutiatingly painful, brush the whole tongue.

I would first suggest to get a new toothbrush, it would be a horrible thing to have an infection in your mouth and you can start brushing it as soon as you can tolerate the pain, it took about three days for the swelling to go down and most of the pain to go away

you shouldn't until the swelling comes and goes. there is a chance of ripping it if you do. the constant swishing with listerine will keep the germs under control. i wouldn't brush the tongue for atleast 2 weeks.

Once you have knocked out your front teeth with your piercing, it won't be a probem... you can just reach in the opening left from your teeth and brush till you're heart's content.
