Is there a way of playing them like in preview on a PC? I am having to open them in imageready every time

Any graphic editor or viewer can see GIF files, use Mac Paint for instance.

If it's an animated GIF, open it in any web browser (Safari, Firefox, Opera etc.) to preview the animation.

I don't have an exact answer for this, but I have an idea, and I would also like to see this question answered. I believe there might be a plugin or mod somewhere that you can use.

animated gifs? graphicconverter will play them. its shareware.
preview app opens them also...
