It's called a Murphy bed because the inventor's name was William Murphy.

It's called a Murphy bed and was first patented in 1916.
There are kits available that you can use on a standard bed in order to convert it into the Murphy style bed.
They have always been popular, and are regaining popularity today especially in larger cities with smaller living spaces.
