The X-15

SR -71 Blackbird was and is still the fastest jet. It was used for photographic spying.

The X-15 was the first throttleable rocket, but it was not a jet.

Good question...militarily speaking, the SR-71 reputedly is the fastest, but the Soviet Fox-bat-25 is reportedly able to catch it, but it has to divert power to use its missiles, hence the SR-71 has never been shot down. I do know that the SR-71 is so fast that while sitting on the tarmac fully-fueled, it literally leaks like a sieve, but when airborne its speed is so fast that the aircraft's skin stretches, thereby sealing all the fuel leaks. No pictures available, sorry.

X-15 4,520 mph world record. Fastest manned aircraft. Not only is the North American X-15 the fastest aircraft ever, it is the highest flying. The X-15 was launched from under the wing of a B-52. Thrust was obtained from one engine that produced 70,400 lbs. at maximum altitude.

If one defines jet as "air breathing" (as opposed to rocket, where the oxydizer is on board with the fuel) vehicle, without requirements to have a crew on board, then the fastest is the X43, by a fair margin. It flew at around Mach 10, after being accelerated by a Pegasus air launched rocket. The craft is emant to test supersonic combustion ramjet (scramjet) propulsion.
Videos are hard to come by, as the thing flies out of range of most camera in no times flat, and the craft destroys itself due to kinetic heating at the end of its flight.

The A-12 was slightly faster than the F-12 or SR-71.

SR-71

it's max speed still hasn't been declassified.
but every time another jet sets a new record, the SR-71 does it the next day, just to show that it can. and it is not a new plane.

it outran a missile that locked onto it in the Gulf War.
also, it is pretty.
