Atheist here, right down to me toes

2007-09-19 09:23:03 · 41 answers · asked by Anonymous in Society & Culture Religion & Spirituality

I knew it! The weakminded and desperate god-botherers pounced on my use of the word "god", as if my atheism preculkded me from certain areas of the English language. JESUS H CHRIST

Not a big Dawkins fan.

He's far too militant, and tends to miss the point in his books. For instance, his Chapter 4 in the God Delusion, entitled "Why there almost certainly is no God," bases its whole premise on the anthropic principle.

The anthropic principle basically states that no matter how unlikely the Big Bang (or any other unlikely event of nature) is, it had to have happened once, since we are here talking about it.

This principle is a good one in theory, but cannot be used as any kind of proof so long as alternate theories haven't been independently voided. He skips forward to the answer (one possible answer among several, mind you) and tries to use the answer as a means of invalidating the question.

I could theoretically use exactly the same anthropic principle as "proof" for the Invisible Pink Unicorn.

"No matter how unlikely it is for a Divine Invisible Pink Unicorn to exist as uncreated matter, she has to exist, because here we are, as her creations, talking about her."

The funny thing is that he simply wrote a book and it would have sold a few copies but then the Christians started railing against it and it sold millions!!!

Sadly the extreme Christians are getting more extreme each year. Oxford University is taking a long hard look at possibly closing their theological teachings because it has become so narrow and extreme.

The Christians that rail against Dawkins just help sell more of his books and show to the world just how right he is by their actions and words!!!

Of course there are a few good Christians left out there somewhere - do you remember when Christians believed in a loving, inclusive and forgiving God? You would of course have to have a long memory because you would not of heard it in the last ten or more years!!!!

Richard Dawkins is a god send for most free thinking people

Thank GAWD for the lovely Professor Dawkins!!!! (lol!) Yes...I think he is a 'godsend' - the closest thing the human race is ever going to see to one anyway. I think that in a world still full of superstition & the 'supernatural' we have only god to thank for a realist & rationalist at last - in fact I think Richard Dawkins IS God...now there's a thought...

I love to listen to Dawkins, and I love to read his work.

But I think the little following he seems to have developed is rather disturbing at times.

I also prefer his science books to his atheism books, though both are good.

There are a lot of good atheist out there. We lost a good one when Carl Sagan died. You really don't need to look to someone for inspiration or leadership in choosing to be a non- religious person.. Just use common sense.

Wasn't he the host of Family Feud? If so then yes.. truly a godsend to those that don't believe in God.
