Could anyone PLEASE recommend a good garbage can for my kitchen? I need either a brand name, a website, or a store.

Needs to be locking or tightly sealed so even if the dog tips it over it won't open. Would prefer something easily sanitized. Don't really care about material but my kitchen is natural wood, hunter green, and black appliances, so matching would be nice, but not necessary. Needs to be fairly large, not something under sink. Price is negotiable.

Any ideas? So far I have found zilch in local stores.

(Jeez, I sound like those folks who want 'tiny, quiet, shedless, well-behaved, already potty trained, cheap dogs') LOL

PS: The dog has learned every single thing I have taught her except for this one annoying thing- I am working on it every day but a stronger can would really help.

EDIT: I already recycle everything- and I mean everything! The kitchen garbage is used for food leftovers- I do try to compost for the garden in the summer but that still leaves months with garbage in house- Also, typical non-recyclable stuff that can't go down a disposal- plastic wrap, used foil, etc. You know, kitchen garbage!

About a year ago there was a new product that was scented so that (supposedly) dogs and ants wouldn't want to go through your trash.

I searched Google and couldn't find it. Either they don't advertise well or else they went out of business.

I know this isn't terribly helpful, but maybe you can think up a better search if you really want this.

I've also seen this trash bin. Looks pretty sturdy: http://www.doggy-safe.com/ Field tested with wolves lol.

Keep shopping and share with those of us that have dogs that dump the kitchen trash as often as they can. I bought a fairly heavy, stainless steel with a lid that is released by a lever and my Dachshunds still dump it over and manage to get it open so they can empty it for me....all over the house. I set my trash on the kitchen counter when I am leaving.......

If you get one with a fairly tight fitting lid, what we used to do when we all used regular garbage cans outside was, put about a 1/2 cup of ammonia into the garbage can, it seemed to discourage those critters that would otherwise dump it. I wouldn't put 1/2 cup in the kitchen waste basket but maybe a teaspoon full??

Have you look on bed, bath and beyond web site. They have the ones that you have to step ont he peddle in front of the can to open the lid. They are supposed to be child proof too. If not there than a higher end store may have them. Also I saw in our local Costco a can that was pretty tall like the ones you see in the restaurants with top that swings. Maybe that type would work better for you. I dont have garbage hounds here so I never really had to worry about it too much.
Hope those suggestions helped!

I have a stainless steel one from Canworks. It has a plastic liner you can take out to wash. You step on the pedel at the bottom of it to open it.

I see similar ones at Bed Bath and Beyond and Linens and Things. I think we got this one about 5 years ago and no one (of the 5 dogs and the numerous fosters) has broken into it yet. This one was about $100.00

It also looks good in the kitchen. I have stainless appliances so it matches - if that matters.

Like I said, Mine is a CANWORKS...

Good luck!

another option would be to keep the dog out of the kitchen when you are not there to supervise. Child gates work well, or just shut the door.
If you have an open-plan home, I don't know what you can do. Sorry.
You could check into having a trash compactor installed. I have not seen one in a long time, but they still have them I think.

Do you have a place you can put the can that is out of dog reach by chance. That is what we do if we have to put anything particularly enticing to the dogs in the trash. I actually have a baby gate that divides my kitchen from my breeze way and basement stairs. We put the trash on the staircase landing or in the breeze way if we're worried about them getting into it.

This is a difficult thing to "train out" cuz most of the time, they don't even think about it when you're there... it's when you leave the room/house that they decide it's safe to go snooping for snacks!

Do you really need to keep a trash can in the kitchen? Most kitchens have a garbage disposal in the sink for those types of waste. If you have a lot of paper items - boxes, bags, newspaper - could you set them out in the recycle bin in the garage immediately after use? Same for plastic bags/containers, aluminum cans, and glass bottles - straight to the recycle bin. That pretty much leaves metal cans and plastic wrap/styrafoam plates from meats. Those can be tossed right into the can you wheel out to the curb each week. No garbage in the house. No chance for the dog to win.

I have small dogs, so this isn't an issue here. (My golden doesn't look in the garbage, she can't peel herself away from me that long.) But would it work just to sit it under the counter or even up on the counter to keep it away from them? Or perhaps on your patio or other room just outside the kitchen?

That might help until you can find a good garbage can.
Good luck.

The only thing I can think of that would be large enough is a normal trash can with a lid. I have a friend who made a box of pine wood and sets the trash can inside that so it still looks good. They have a really big kitchen tho...

Have you tried one of those stainless steel ones with the step on lever to open the metal lid? I don't know what size your dog is, but I have minpins, who are notorious for getting into the trash in a house, no matter what. When my kids knock these over, they still can't open them, because the lid won't lift unless you step on the lever. Home Depot is where I got mine.
