whether it's the trumpet, piano, saxophone, and especially singing. Everyone tells me that I need to sing more prettily. When I sing I utilize my entire voice and often have an edge in my tone. I do not artificially apply it. If I try and sing cleanly it sounds to me as bland and dull. Is this a bad quality? What would necessarily wrong with singing coarsely in a ballad?

An edge on a tone isn't a bad thing. It makes you unique =D.

Don't sweat it, thats just your style. In my mind, the emotional content and the composition are more important than the sound of the instrument itself (even if that instrument is your voice). Though of course some instruments are better suited to certain genres or songs.

Bob Dylan and Neil Young are two examples who are to me fantastic singers who have very limited vocal instruments. They use what they have in interesting and engaging ways and thats what you should do too.

The key phrase is "it sounds to me". You will sound different in your own head than you do to everyone else. Record yourself and see what you think.
