Paula, it just shows that you dont stay ontop of what goes on, in "your" country. . .there is a shortage of recruits for the armed forces, and thats a fact. The studies mentioned, i have researched them, they are facts, IF you dont want to believe them, thats your problem.

Steddy voter, Do you know why the AF, has more people than needed?? Have you taken a look at what they go through compared to the Marines or the Army?? the AF is a walk in the park compared to all the other ones, my cousin is a marine, and he's told me numerous times now that they are falling short, too short on people. . .

I am glad that there are senators that are realizing that it is not the fault of the children that they are in this country illegally, but the fault of the parents. I have a student who's parents are here illegaly and the child hardly even speaks Spanish anymore. I don't think it's fair to deport a child whose only home they remember is the US and has proven their abilities in our education system. The DREAM act is only offering the possibility of legality to those select few undocumented students who have proven themselves as positive members of the US society. There would be no easy way out with this bill if the government required that all applications for DREAM act status came directly from the administration or guidance department at each of the undocumented students' schools. It should be an application task much like that of college, providing transcripts, SAT/ACT and ASVAB scores and proving that the student would indeed be a welcome addition to our colleges or our armed forces. The DREAM act seems like a great plan to me!

Its about someone...if the act is to function the way it should, then, yes, those girls having babies at the age of 14 should not have the same opportunities, but how many girls that have babies at the age of 14 will meet the criteria of having good grades, attending college for 2 years or serving in the military for 2 years? My guess would be none, or close to none.

Durbin's letter was so long that no one could possible comment on all parts of it, but the one paragraph that causes me concern is this one.
"But there are several other parts of the bill which we cannot ignore either. Senator Dianne Feinstein of California has been a leader on the issue of agricultural workers. In her bountiful State, the fruits and vegetables will, frankly, spoil in the fields if they do not bring in workers to pick them and harvest them. Americans are not lining up for these jobs. They are hard, dirty, sweaty, tough jobs. Immigrants will come and do it. They have done it before.

He's as much as said that us Americans can't do hard work in dirty, hot places . Well what about our construction workers? They do hard labor under a sweltering sun while the temperatures are in the 90's. What about the coal miners. Americans do that work and it's the dirtiest and most dangerous work there is. BOTTOM LINE, Pay an American a decent wage and the work gets done, AND DONE RIGHT.

A brief prelude of facts before reading my answer:

10,000 slots per country are available under the "Greencard Lottery"

We currently deport 150-times the percentage of NON-Latino aliens than the percentage of aliens of Latino origin.

LEGAL residents who come seeking a college degree must BRING 100% of the tuition AND all normal living expenses (I should know. I have several friends who did so happily)
________________

OK. My answer.

If the Dream Act had a reasonable limit, say 5,000 per country of origin, representing the absolute best, brightest and most cooperative of those eligible,

--and if they agreed to:

pay entirely for their own college,
serve at least 10 years in the military and
have no kids before age 32,

...then I would likely be more amenable.

My legal-resident friends live hear in a veritable HELL-on-earth while our congress is considering taking more of our taxes and resources to effectively press our citizen-lips against these invaders' behinds. You want that? You go for it!

Legal residents awaiting their interview pay for every dime of every needed product and service they consume. They don't get the slightest break from taxes. If they break even a minor law, it could derail the process so they walk on eggshells. They live in fear of making the wrong friend who might use their status to coerce them. And most are waiting more than 14 years LIVING LIKE THAT before their interview!!!!

I live in a neighborhood made up almost entirely of illegals and their offspring (yes they're Latino, NO, they do NOT represent Latin America - that's why those countries are booting them out!) These people, far from living in any fear at all are more aware of the myriad laws protecting them than you and I will ever be. And they BY GAWD USE EVERY TRICK!!!

Their sense of entitlement would be bad enough if they had any condom sense. Instead, the girls usually have their first kid by 14. By 23, most have 4 or 5 (the census dept reports 4.5 children/family among Latinos in the U.S.).

I may 'sound' cruel but, in fact, using any resources for this Act takes that many away from those who could really use them.

Although I understand that kids brought here illegally by their parents are in a tough situation, I don't feel that it is the responsibility of our tax money and our government to spend time and money on special clauses for them. What about the children and young adults who's parents have been on waiting lists for years to enter this country legally? They, too, have things to contribute to our society, and I would rather see the preferences given to them. I don't think there should be any type of squaters rights that will put those who are illegal ahead of the ones that are patient and law abiding, patiently waiting through the proper channels. Immigrants do make great contributions to our society, but I still stand firm that those who respect our policies (by trying to come legally)should be given priority. It is not the responsibility of our government to adapt for the poor judgement of adults of other countries.

And, although there may be lower than expected recruitment numbers, that does not mean that our military is hurting for personnel. The Air Force, for example, is forcing out officers because it is saturated and cannot support any more. I know this for a fact, I have a friend who is a colonel that has been forced to leave rather than complete the 2 years necessary for his full retirement. After 18 years of service (several deployments in Afghanistan and Iraq, too), he's been shown the door.

I say dream on. If may be a dream for the illegals but it is a nightmare for the American tax payer. How many American kids are going to be denied financial aid because the illegals have no reportable income because they get paid under the table so they will quality for the limit funds available. How many more illegals are packing the bags of their children to come with them or alone so they can take advantage of this amnesty. All any type of amnesty brings is more demands for more amnesty

PS What durbin did not post was that if a illigal does 910 hours of community service they are also granted amnesty

2007-09-19 09:20:53 · answer #5 · answered by jean 7 · 7 2

Not going to happen. No more amnesties. No mas. The dream act is a farce.

The DREAM Act abandons any pretense of “temporary status” for the illegal aliens who apply. Instead, all amnesty recipients are awarded lawful permanent resident (green card) status. The only caveat is that the alien’s status is considered “conditional” for the first six years. To move on to the nor mal green card, the alien need only obtain a degree from any institution of higher education, complete two years toward a bachelor’s degree, or show that doing so would present a hardship to himself or his family members. Of course, an alien with a normal green card can bring in family members and seek citizenship.

Furthermore, the DREAM Act makes it absurdly easy for just about any illegal alien—even one who does not qualify for the amnesty—to evade the law. According to Section 624(f), once an alien files an application—any application, no matter how ridic ulous—the federal government is prohibited from deporting him. Moreover, with few exceptions, fed eral officers are prohibited from either using infor mation from the application to deport the alien or sharing that information with another federal agency, under threat of up to $10,000 fine.

Thus, an alien’s admission that he has violated federal immigration law cannot be used against him—even if he never had any chance of qualifying for the DREAM Act amnesty in the first place. The DREAM Act also makes illegal aliens eligible for various federal student loans and work-study programs.
