Whether you keep any kittens depends on whether there's enough space for everyone in your house, whether it's OK with any other humans living there, etc. You don't HAVE to keep any of them.
Kittens are generally ready for new homes when they're about 10 weeks old. This gives the mother cat enough time to wean the kittens and give them their "cat training." The more time the kittens spend with each other when they're young, the better-adjusted they'll be when they grow up AND the better they'll get along with humans and other cats.
As for making it easier on the mother cat, the best thing to do is give the kittens to their new humans one or two at a time, rather than all at once. This gives the mother cat's milk time to finish drying up (in case the kittens aren't quite done nursing), and also gives her time to get used to them going away.
And after the kittens have all found new homes, that's the time for Spirit to have a date with the vet to be fixed. Good luck with everything!
EDIT - Six weeks is too young for the kittens to leave their mom, and four weeks is WAY too young. Eight weeks should be the minimum; ten weeks is better.

Nature will takes it's course. Your mama cat will naturally give the kittens the boot when it's time for them to go, usually around 8-10 weeks. Anytime before then is a little too soon because the kittens haven't learned all the "cat skills" from their mama yet.
It's up to you if you want to keep the kittens, but Spirit won't be depressed. Most mama cat's get fed up with kitten antics once their maternal hormone level drops.

Only you can answer whether to keep any of the kittens. Kittens are normally weaned around 8 weeks, and at 10 weeks or so, it should be satisfactory to let them go to a new home. You can 'audition' them earlier to help secure new homes for them.
Once the kittens are weaned, the mother will really start to consider getting pregnant again, so when the kittens are around 10-12 weeks, this would be a good time to get her spayed.
Spirit will not get depressed, as that is a human feeling. In fact, if the kittens stay too long, she will try and drive them away so she can go into heat and start a new cycle of kittens.

Someone said 6 weeks...that is wrong you should wait until 8 weeks so that the cats will become well adjusted cats. Cats in the wild will nurse until 12 weeks, so taking them away at 8 is still a little too early but acceptable. Please don';t give them away at 6 weeks. I have a cat that was abandoned at 6 weeks (mommy got hit by a car) and he sucks on his arm, mimicing nursing on his mother. This started as soon as I got him and he is 4 and still does it.... so to have well adjusted cats I would wait until 8 weeks. Also your mother cat will not be depressed. She might wonder where they are for a few days. She will then go into heat...please get her fixed their are millions of unwanted cats killed every year in shelter. If you are wuilling to give a few more cats a loving home then if you can't homes for some then why not keep them! Good luck.

Kittens should not be given away until they are at least 8 weeks old. Your cat may miss them for a few days, but mother cats adjust pretty quickly and move on. Kids after all do grow up and move out in every species. Keep one or two if you like, but if you do, please get them all (mom included) spayed and neutered. Cats breed very rapidly and will breed with their siblings and parents.

Your AVATAR is really cute!! If you keep the kittens long enough, the mother won't care. Tooo early on she is caring for them and they will be missed by mom. You will see if you do decide to keep a couple they will eventualy go their own way.

Wait at least 8 weeks, and make sure mama gets spayed as soon as possible. If you have room in your home and heart for more, keep as many as you like, but make sure you get them all fixed. There is such a pet overpopulation problem, please prevent more births.
