I mean that pain is only percieved by the brain, not any other organ or not?!. Please Explain.

tibbalz, I agree it is a defense mechanism. But it is still a disorder when it happens, that is it is not normal for your body and organs to be in pain.

This is a very good question! I would not define pain as a mental disorder in itself. It is the bodies way of telling the brain that something is not right.
However, the brain can control pain..... I know this for a fact. as with a person who engages in self injury for example. they will often say they do not feel pain....
In those circumstances it is part of a mental problem, because a person who can't feel pain has disconnected from their bodies primary defense mechanisms.
people with psychosis can engage in taking their own eyes out, or very major harm to themselves, is this mind over body?
Normal people do not like pain really, however there are ways in which others (like) it.

I am not a physician but have studied pain somewhat. I think the most severe pain a human can experience is that of suicidal depression; it can kill you! Normal physical pain is a god given nerve induced feeling (qualia, look that up!) that is there to signal the individual that something is wrong. The feeling is usually felt at the site of the injury or disorder. Suicidal depression is mental; it too is a signal something is wrong but wrong with your thinking.. Since physical pain is nerve induced and the brain is a part of the nervous system it too is mental but is not normally considered a disorder but a natural defense mechanism.

The mental pain of depression can be controlled psychologically; that is the job of psychotherapists and talk therapy. As some have answered here physical pain can be controlled somewhat by practice but this is rare. Usually you need a "pain-killer," if only an aspirin, when it is severe..

I know women who have experienced the pain of childbirth will disagree that suicidal depression is the most severe pain but natural childbirth techniques can make this much less severe. My wife did it and said childbirth using those techniques was not much worse than "spitting out a seed".

Good luck with your pain, good health, peace and love!

It is normal for your body and organs to be in pain. It's not normal for that to be an all the time thing, but it's your bodies way of letting you know that somethings wrong. When you feel physical pain, your brain registers the sensations. Basically, if you're doing something to promote the pain, anal sex, hitting yourself, running into walls, etc., it's your brain trying to teach you how to stop so you don't do that anymore. There are people however who have an insensitivity to pain, this is congenital analgia for which there is no known physical abnormalities in people who have it. They often suffer many intense injuries as children though. Can we control pain? Yeah, like someone said about the sumo's, you can mentally train yourself to block out the mental receptors that cause our awareness of pain. I wouldn't suggest it however as it our bodies way of letting us know something is up.

And now for my public service announcement. If you're having intense pains for seemingly no reasons or are in an abusive relationship of any kind, please seek help. Go see a doctor, GP or psychiatrist and explain it to them and they'll help you in any way they can.

Depending upon the cause of the pain, it can be controlled to a certain extent. Relaxation exercises, biofeedback, physical exercise, distracting oneself through reading or attending some kind of event that captures your attention are some of the ways. Their effectiveness though does depend upon the cause of the pain. There is a formal DSM IV diagnosis of "Psychogenic Pain Disorder." Pain is a very real part of some illnesses such as diabetes, fibromyalgia, as well as some other neurological disorders. Sometimes, it can be a component of major depression - especially among the elderly. In fact one of the new anti-depressants Cymbalta (SP?) is given to address pain as well as depression.

Emotional stress can make pain worse. I find that when I don't attend therapy for a couple of weeks, that my fibromyalgia gets worse. I have arthritus in my neck, through education, lifestyle modification and pychotherapy, I can learn techniques to help me "better manage my pain and learn what not to do to increase it" but not neccessarily get rid of it. Surjury may be needed to do that.

Hope this is helpful.

Pain is caused by nerves in your body. (little pressure sensors)
You feel pain because if you didn't you'd never figure out that say for example slamming your head into a tree can kill you
It's a natural defence mechanism not a disorder.

People can ignore the pain but it takes a lot of training and no I do not know how they do it. I have heard that they focus hard on something else.

Interesting question. I suspect that most pain is mental. Did you know that people afflicted with multiple personalities can actually manifest SCARS for one or more personality - a scar that does NOT appear on another personality? That tells you the power of the mind. Researchers have long believed in a link between certain types of personalities and cancer. And so much illness is stress related.

I doubt it that pain is 100percent mental, but you can decrease it by hypnosis, and good mental techniques to ignore pain. Alot of illness can be caused by emotional stress.
