Jr was driving for his his late's Father enterprise (DEI). His stepmother took over and they do not get along.

Jr is going to drive for Hendricks Motorsports. Now, the company owns the car number (not the driver) and Teresa Earnhardt would not let Jr have it so he had to change his number.

88 is pretty close to what he had, (fans who had the number 8 tatooed - yes some do that) now only have to have an 8 added

Anyways, it all comes down to say that his stepmother is wicked and he didn't have a choice

Each team leases the numbers from NASCAR and has rights to them. When DEI couldn't reach agreement with Dale Jr, he was hired by Hendrick. They negotiated with DEI, could not come to an agreement with switching the #8 to Hendrick. So, #8 stays with DEI.
Hendrick was able to make deal for the #88. So, Dale Jr will be #88 in 2008 sponsored by Pepsico (Mountain Dew) and the National Guard. It was announced today in Dallas, TX.

The car numbers are owned by the teams, not the drivers. Because Jr is Leaving DEI and going to Hendrix he had to ask to take the "8" with him. the controlling interest of DEI and Hendrix could not come to an agreement for this to happen. So another team that had the rights to 88 is letting JR use it as it was his Grandfathers number.

~hope that explains it to ya~

Hendrick Motorsports couldn't buy the 8 car from DEI, Thats why Dale Jr. is driving the 88. I don't know why he doesn't have Budweiser on his car next year.

Jr is going to be driving for another team next year (Hendrick Motorsports). Certain numbers belong to certain teams and sponsors which is the case with the number 8 (DEI holds the rights to that number), so he cant take it with him.

Dei holds the rights to the number 8, he changed teams and his stepmom would not release the number to HMS.. Who cares now, he is with a new team, and he has the 88 now its over its done...now we all can move on.. its simple..

He is leaving his step-mother's comapny because she wouldnt sell him the other 2% so he could own 51% of DEI. And his step-mom is being a biotch and wouldnt let him take the number
