Your soul is your identity, your moral and emotional nature. It is "located" in your brain -- a part of intelligence, information for interacting with other humans.

The word "soul" has two meanings in religion. First, it means "human being." Second, it means "mind." In each case, the soul is not an actual thing any more than the mind is an actual thing. It is just an abstract word used to describe the non-physical dimension of the human personality. Remember, the word "soul," in Greek, is "psyche" - hence "psychology" = study of the soul.

The soul is the conscious identity. It is the part of you that can watch your space time existence and experience from a distance if you don't get swept up and away in thought and emotion. It's pure awareness that has a will, and that consciousness applies mind and body to the accomplishment of the will, for better or worse. It is the essence of a human that survives death when the mind and body no longer function.

God has been described as a three-part being.
We are made in the image of God, so it should be no surprise that we, too, are three-part beings.

Our three parts have been identified as body, spirit, and soul.

Body, of course, is the part that we see, that we inhabit in our course of life on the earth. It is our physical self.

Spirit is the force of life that gives the body the ability to move, breathe, and reproduce. Some folks call this the "animal" self, but I prefer to refer to it as the living self.

Soul is the part that is born upon the union of the body and the spirit. It is the identity that grows up and develops your wants, and desires. It makes the decisions to perform actions, whether for good or for bad. The Soul carries with it accountability for its actions.

Upon the death of the physical body, the three parts are free from one another. The body returns to the earth, from whence it came. The Spirit returns to God, who gave it.

The soul, however, remains. It lives on in a different form, and goes on to a judgement as to whether it led a worthy life or not.

If found to be suitable, this soul will be issued a new spiritual body to inhabit permanently, and will move on to what we know as heaven.

If not found suitable during the judgement, the soul is discarded to a place described as permanent punishment.

My understanding is that the soul consists of a person's mind, will, and emotions. It is separate from the person's spirit and physical body. Here is how I learned it: I am a spirit, my soul is a tool that I use to communicate with the world, and I live in a body.

The soul is the spiritual side of you. You can not live without a body and a soul. Your body on this earth is finite, the one you receive after death will be eternal.

The soul lives inside the body.

6But there went up a mist from the earth, and watered the whole face of the ground.

7And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

8And the LORD God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed.

Man is a soul. At death the soul ceases to think or feel and returns to the dust from which it was made.

(Genesis 2:7) And Jehovah God proceeded to form the man out of dust from the ground and to blow into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man came to be a living soul.

(Genesis 3:19) In the sweat of your face you will eat bread until you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken. For dust you are and to dust you will return.”

(Psalm 146:3-4) Do not put YOUR trust in nobles, Nor in the son of earthling man, to whom no salvation belongs.  4 His spirit goes out, he goes back to his ground; In that day his thoughts do perish.

(Ecclesiastes 3:19-20) For there is an eventuality as respects the sons of mankind and an eventuality as respects the beast, and they have the same eventuality. As the one dies, so the other dies; and they all have but one spirit, so that there is no superiority of the man over the beast, for everything is vanity. 20 All are going to one place. They have all come to be from the dust, and they are all returning to the dust.

(Ecclesiastes 9:5) For the living are conscious that they will die; but as for the dead, they are conscious of nothing at all, neither do they anymore have wages, because the remembrance of them has been forgotten.

(Ecclesiastes 9:10) All that your hand finds to do, do with your very power, for there is no work nor devising nor knowledge nor wisdom in She´ol, the place to which you are going.

(Ezekiel 18:4) Look! All the souls—to me they belong. As the soul of the father so likewise the soul of the son—to me they belong. The soul that is sinning—it itself will die.

(Ezekiel 18:20) The soul that is sinning—it itself will die. A son himself will bear nothing because of the error of the father, and a father himself will bear nothing because of the error of the son. Upon his own self the very righteousness of the righteous one will come to be, and upon his own self the very wickedness of a wicked one will come to be.
