When I say public, I mean in the presence of people you know, like at work!

No, provided that it is done discretely. Really letting rip and saying something like "pick the bones out of that, then!" could be considered less than polite.

If avoidable, it should be avoided. I was an obnoxious farter for many decades until through research I found out that I am gluten intolerant, and that the inadequate processing of wheat was causing excessive and VERY unpleasant gas.

With a large fart every 2 minutes or so, I could not have stepped out of public anyway.

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT: Particularly obnoxious farts are frequently caused by food sensitivities. If you suffer from these, it is in everyone's best interests that you try to determine what these sensitivities are and avoid those foods. Note that sensitivities do not usually show up on allergy tests.

This is so very nasty to me. How do American redneck male do fart so much and loud? I live in trailer neighborhood with many redneck neighbors and they all fart and belch like some sort of unholy beasts when they are drinking the beer. I can hear them through the night as I sit on back deck. The smells are so disgusting but the men all laugh very much at each other.

Yes I do think it's a little rude, I know that sometimes wind might just pop out and surprise you, but most times you can tell when it's coming and can make a polite excuse to leave the room! In the company of family it's alright, but not when you are with friends or acquaintances, and certainly not with colleagues!

Of course not - and etiquette agrees.
Flatulence is assumed to not be under your control and does not require any apology. Anyone saying or doing anything to bring attention to the event is downright rude.

If you can feel such an event coming on, and have time to go to the rest room, do so by all means. But do not feel 'rude' if this happens, as it is not under your control.

If it's possible, step away from the group of people or at best,go to the nearest restroom. We had a girl at work who took great pleasure in passing gas wherever she happened to be. She even did it around the patients. They thought it was funny, the staff didnt share their sense of humor. I often wonder if she ever got married.

We have a saying in Scotland,
"Let yer wind blow free wherever ye may be"
If everyone was like this, we could all have a good chuckle
The world would be a happier place for it :)

There are times no matter how hard you try, it just slips out. I would say that you should try to keep it in until you are away from people, but if you have no choice, say "excuse me" like if you had burped or something.

Or blame it on the nearby plant... (jk)

i think it depends on how well you know them. also if they dont like it. if you dont know them all that well, you can try it, and if they dont laugh or they are disgusted i would probably hold off til i get to know them better. i generally fart anywhere though. i just ease it out silently and hope it doesnt stink. haha.
