The contractor came today and told me my floors are red pine and that I would have to go with the colonial maple stain. I asked can I have them stained a lighter color he said no. Is this true?

You can't lighten wood with stain, only darken it...

The only way to turn a dark pine floor, to a light color is to bleach it, which would be expensive , messy, and time consuming...

It would be cheaper to replace the floor..

You can't stain a floor to achieve a lighter color. You would need to sand it, then apply a bleaching agent on the now unfinished pine floors.

Ordinary domestic bleach scrubbed in and rinsed off with clean water will do a lot to lighten a floor. You can also purchase stronger chemical bleaches which are applied in stages. These should be used in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. Take care as the concentrated fumes can be dangerous. Wear a protective mask and open all doors and windows to ensure good ventilation.

You can then apply a clear varnish on top to finish. :) It is a bit time consuming though and may require a bit of expertise to make sure it is done properly.
