I think the look of stainless steel appliances makes a kitchen look like a garage or some industrial kitchen. I also find that granite looks like puke.

Am I the only person in the world who thinks this fad is going to be by the wayside like the avocado green, harvest gold and burnt sienna appliances of the 70s?

Stainless steel is impossible to keep clean and scratch-free! Especially if you have little ones in the house.

And the granite is a lot of maintenance too! You have to condition it, and many household cleaners will harm the finish....and I've even heard that a hot pot could scald it!

I'll stick to Corian. I love the stuff.

I like the white cabinets and laminate countertops and nice hardware. I'm just not into the sterile look of stainless. And I don't understand the overinflated prices of granite or stainless either!

Recently, my sister and her family bought a house. It hadn't been updated since 1977, the kitchen was in a horrible state. I talked her out of the stainless steel and granite (one because of price) but also because she has a small dog (who would scratch up the appliances) and a toddler. I do think these kitchens look nice in the showroom, but I'm a little neurotic about my kitchen cleanliness and I would go crazy trying to keep them looking nice.

Also, if I were to spend that much on granite and ss, I'd never want to change it....and I know that in 10 years I'd be sick of it!

Em:

I know my style is more along the lines of vintage/traditional. If I were house shopping and one house had an older kitchen (in relatively good condition) and the other had a modern, stainless/granite kitchen, I'd go with the older one. I can replace countertops and paint cupboards. I also adore the look of an art deco styled kitchen (with modern appliances).

I really like stainless steel, personally. I think it looks really nice. Yes, it's impractical with young children, so if you have them it's obviously not a style for your kitchen. I just think that they look very clean and contemporary...very sleek.

I really like the look of granite as well. There are lots of different colors for granite countertops now. They come in everything from dark navy/black/gray to a rich reddish brown...also light creamy colors and pretty green, just to name a few.

I think that in combination, they look great together. Personally, I'm a fan of a kitchen like this:

If that gives you a better impression of what I like. I really love modern/contemorary, and that's why I like stainless steel and granite. Clean lines :)

Don't take this the wrong way - you sound like my mom...she loves the classic traditional style everything. I always fought her about how I wanted to design my room...in the end I always seemed to win haha. I watch HGTV with her all the time, and I always wanted to be an interior designer because I loved watching those shows.

So to answer your question the short way...personally I like stainless steel and granite because they are clean, sleek and contemporary lines. I think they're here to stay, because the world is being more about technology and modern...what with iPods and iPhones being so popular.

I will have to agree with you on the stainless steel. I don't really mind the look, but the upkeep is not worth it.

On the corian comment, however, you can't be serious? I had a granite countertop kitchen and I LOVED IT! It was the easiest upkeep ever. You don't need anything professional cleaners, just a little all-purpose windex does the trick. I love the feel, the look, the cleanup, everything about it! Maybe you haven't seen all the colors / patterns available?

Good luck selling your house if it's white with gold handles....

I kind of like the granite as I like the look of a dark stone in the kitchen but I don't care for the stainless steel industrial look at all. My biggest complaint about most stainless steel stuff is the upkeep - fingerprints show and are unsightly. I know that there are stainless steel cleaners but they're expensive and time consuming.

I do think that the industrial look will fade in popularity but is too classic a look now to go the way of the harvest gold fridge.

I actually have all stainless steel appliances and granite counter tops. I personally love the look. It's just a matter of personal preference. To be honest I could care less if it's granite or corian, I just happened to fall in love with a particular granite piece. I only condition my granite once a month and I use a scratch free sponge to clean it daily. no harm done.
The appliances in my opinion really aren't that difficult to keep clean. :o)

No, it's not really my thing either. It's an effort to try to have the look of a gourmet restaurant kitchen, but few people even do that type of cooking at home, so it's really a big waste. Anyway, I have heard a lot of complaints about stainless steel appliances and how easy they get scratched. People also complain that magnets don't stick to the fridge. Whatever. They do scratch easily and are difficult if not impossible to repair. Anyway, yeah, it's a cold and boring look.

Maybe you just haven't seen the right type of granite ! There are literally thousands to choose from in an array of colors/styles... I don't think it's a fad I think the look is pretty much here to stay... If you wanted you could look into less expensive composite countertops/laminates and get plain or not stainless appliances... good luck

I had a stainless sink and I ripped it out and put a white porcelain sink in it. It is impossible to keep a stainless sink to look clean and nice. Same thing for the refrigerator, you can see every mark on it, especially on the handle. I don't care for it at all. As for counter tops, I love the butcher block look or big tiles. As for the back splash I think that glass tiles look really pretty. My kitchen has to be functional and I don't like spending hours by polishing stainless steel and granite counter tops. For me practically over fashion.

Do not be afraid. You are not alone. ;)

I prefer almost anything else!

But that comment about the harvest gold of the 70's hit below the belt. I live in a 3rd world country and am so glad to have harvest gold fixtures, as many homes don't have inside plumbing! lol

Stainless will go the way of the coppertone...that awful pink and blue of the 90's.

I'm with you on this one. I think the stainless steel/granite look will become very dated. Considering that it's already being thrown in as a freebie in new homes in my city (Toronto), that should tell you what you need to know about how soon it'll become out of style.

Well - 8 years have passed since most of these comments have been made and it is more and more and more difficult to avoid stainless and get almost ANYTHING else. I ask why of the dealers. They INSIST it is because that's what customers want. I say, that is what DEALERS and MANUFACTURERS want to sell because they can charge more for their products. I'm sick and frustrated at the whole thing.
