Wow! 24 answers in 15 minutes! Yeah, old Herb was a pretty clever guy. I miss him. (Used to read him every day when I lived in San Francisco.)

That quote was so typical of Herb Caen's funnies, gawd how I loved his column!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I read him every day too, and we all miss him terribly since he died. The stupid Chronicle hasn't been the same without him. He had, as you know, pithy responses to every situation.

Remember the editorial page cartoon after he died? He was seen approaching heaven, and in the cartoon he says something like...yeah , but it's not San Francisco.

It's crazy. Publishing companies are really upset about it because if one of them has the rights to a Pulitzer winner it sees an enormous increase in business. In my opinion, literary publishing is in enough danger given the rising popularity of ridiculous self-publishing and electronic reading devices; the last thing it needs is a blow like this. And besides, the Pulitzer is a tradition and I thought there were several excellent works of fiction published this year that would be worthy of a nomination.

"The trouble with born-again Christians is that they are an even bigger pain the second time around." ~~Herb Caen

Good for a mild chuckle the first reading and and a mournful sorrow the second time around. Caen's quote is the bitter truth.

BINGO! Right On the money.

I am an ex-smoker and The first few years after I quit I was a born again breather - I was an annoying azzhole to smokers.

The difference is - I got over it. I leave the smokers alone now.

The Born Agains just don't know how to quit. Unfortunately there is no patch or gum for them.

Sounds like my kind of guy. I wish I had gotten to read more of his stuff. That's the problem with living so far out of the Mainstream. You miss out on a lot of interestingly good stuff.

I know people type "LOL" for laugh out loud, but this really did make me laugh out loud.

It's true that there are many "born-again" types who were alcoholics or junkines that now just channel that same compulsion into religion, trying to recapture that high of their first spiritual "buzz". They were annoying before and even more annoying after.

I think it is true. Every "born again" christian I have met is a little hard core about the whole thing.

Reincarnation = born again. Christianity is merely a variation on the theme of reincarnation.

What a hoot! Some of them DO seem to have less of a sense of humor than the average FBI agent.
