Everyone made wonderful suggestions, but I'd like to also contribute in another way. When my son turned one, of course we had a big birthday party. He received A LOT of toys and clothing.

At age one, he really does not appreciate the value of a gift, and, well-an empty box or pots & pans kept him happy & content. He received some checks which I used to stock up on diapers, and then used the remainder to purchase savings bonds from the bank. Some of our older relatives bought my son savings bonds in larger increments. Out of sight, out of mind.

When he is 18 I plan on giving him all the savings bonds he has received so far (He also got some for his 2nd birthday). By then the bond will not only reach maturity, but it will also gain interest.

Good luck!

Hi, how about personalized books? Kids love to hear their own name in the storyline. Go to this website http://www.tlc-expressions.com They have lots of titles like Sesame Street, Three Little Pigs, Teddy Bear Land, Noah's Ark, Ballerina Princess, When I Grow Up, Sports titles and so many more. Check it out - they're very reasonably priced, and make a wonderful, unique & special gift... It's something they can enjoy now and keep forever!! Good Luck!

Clothes is best for the parent :), but my daughter got a Fridge DJ for her first birthday and it was by far he favorite thing ever. Its like a little radio with different stations and a magnet on the back so it can go on the fridge but I never put it there. She loved having it in the car, and now that shes almost 2 she LOVES dancing to it and singing. Its educational too.

Learning toys that help develop their sensory and motor skills. Although I don't know how interested she'll be with them. My daughter, now 2 1/2, was never really into toys even though I bought her plenty. I mean stuff that makes music, lights up, etc. Otherwise, clothes for the season coming up.

Oh btw I agree with the baby doll & stroller. My daughter never liked her other toys but she loved her baby dolls and strollers. She copies how adults treat people and thats how she treats her dolls. I found her yelling and screaming at her dolls. No idea where that came from...

Play dough, bubbles, bath toys... they make letters and numbers that stick to the walls when they are wet as well as bath crayons and paints. Picture books, medium sized dolls with no attachments. It just depends on the child and what they enjoy doing. You could also get movies. They last a lifetime. My daughter has always loved Disney movies. They have lots of singing and what not in them.

Something that will help them with their cognitiion skills is usually appropriate. Find a toy that helps them with their hand-eye coordination or that lights up and makes noise.

stuffed animals, but not a beanie baby, cuz beanie babies have those tiny beads, so if the toy ever ripped and she got a hold of some she could swallow them and choke. i would suggest a stuffed toy of some sort. hope this helps.

Clothes.

She's too young to even open the presents and mom will appreciate it.

Not sure what size? Always go too big. She'll grow into it.
