I want to build a automated college bell for my college... it should have a basic clock in it and should trigger the bell at the programmed timings.. can anyone suggest which microcontroller to use? or provide me with some guidelines?

anything atmel will do wonderfully, they have a development kit for about $100 that can be used forever. Go try out the atmega1280, its a good all purpose controller, or go to digikey.com and search for microcontroller development kits.

Don't forget British Winter Time .. and you might want to coinsider what should happen during break times (Summer hols etc)
