Peter Luger
178 Broadway
Brooklyn
It's been there for 120 years. President FDR used to play poker upstairs with other well known folks. The steakhouse is truly legendary.

My favorite is Dylan Prime in Tribeca. Its not as well-known as Smith and Wollensky or the Palms (which are chains anyways) but its really nice, the steaks can't be beat, and its a "true" NY experience. If you want somewhere people have heard of, I'd recommend Del Friscos (a chain but great nonetheless) or Sparks (where the mafia guy was gunned down)
