I am not trying to be disrespectful in any way. This is a serious question I have always wondered about. I have asked a Priest in the past but he was unable or unwilling to answer.
Thank you

Yes, there was incest between Adam & Eve's children.

There were also existing humans when Adam & Eve incarnated. The Bible explicitly states that some of Adam & Eve's children went out into the world to marry into existing tribes.

Anthony B hit it right on the head. It's a pretty far reach to announce that there were other people that God created (separate from Adam and Eve) for the mere fact that its all just guessing without something being said about it in the Bible. The best thing we can do is go by the text that we have. You CANNOT trust the Bible but throw in your own ideas whenever something doesn't add up. This happens so often. And what tends to be the problem is either that person doesn't want to accept something or is not doing enough research to find the real answer. One reply to this question said that this was one of the biggest inconsistancies of all and you wouldn't get a straight answer. Well, this question has been answered time and time again but constantly falls on deaf ears because their only goal is to discredit the Bible, not to understand it. What we know from the Bible, like Anthony said and some of the others who answered, is that Adam and Eve lived a long time. Their sons were indeed marrying sisters or cousins, or nieces. But this wasn't something that was looked down on. Now days we deal with all kinds of disease when incest and inbreeding happens. Back then that was not an issue because the genetics were pure. My advice is to get a good Study Bible. It's not biblical text of course but often it opens my eyes to something I missed or had forgotten. Matthew Henry's commentaries are very good. I hope this helped. God bless.

Adam knew his wife, and she conceived. She got pregnant. Now, could it be that when she actually gave birth, she had quadruplets? The bible never speaks on daughters by eve,... only sons. If not quadruplets, then maybe Cain had a maternal twin sister and Abel had a maternal twin sister as well. But wouldn't this suggest incest. How about Genesis 1:27..."So God created man in His own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them". Now this takes place long before He created Adam and Eve. In fact, He doesn't create Adam until Genesis 2:7,..."And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul". There were already people made by God before Adam and Eve. It's possible that Cain and Abel found their wives from these earlier created people.

1. Hi! if u read Ur Bible much more carefully u would realize that Adam had sons & daughters after cain & Abel.
2. U must also note that the bible isn't written like a story book or novel.
3. The Bible is a brake down of the more important things the Almighty God want us to know so that all of us who fear, obey and give glory to him will received the hope of everlasting life.
4. Some text or verses written in many chapters of the Bible were written to give some insight about the situation at that particular time or event.
5. U must also be very careful of people who bring their own opinion and can't show u from the Bible their argument.

No...they were not the first. I know you don't want to go back to the Bible, but if you study the first and second chapters of Genesis carefully you will see.

Genesis 1:27
God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.

Notice it says nothing about Adam nor Eve...There is archeological evidence of several SPECIES of man. Why is it so hard for believers to think He saved the best for last? It is not my intention to put this belief on anyone else, but why would the law be explicit about familial relationships?

Leviticus 18:6 None of you shall approach any blood relative of his to uncover nakedness; I am the LORD.

We (believers) know the consequences of breaking the law--there are no exceptions!

Lot's sons by his daughters are not a sufficient example for me, because no lasting good came from those relationships.

As for the comment that there wasn't a law yet...there had to be a law in place or Adam and Eve would have never been kicked out of the garden, Cain wouldn't have been banished for murder, hell Noah wouldn't have needed a boat.

John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

The LAW seperated the light from the darkness....and still does!

No, there were other races that were created on the 6th day. Cain went to the land of Nod to find a wife, one of many of the other 6th day creations.

Adam and Eve had Seth, as well, and an undisclosed amount of other children.

Adam and Eve were actually created on the 8th day. God looked around and had no one to till the land, so after he rested on the 7th day, he created in Hebrew, 'Ha-Adam.' THE Adam, or THE man, from which the bloodline would one day bring forth the Messiah. God wanted a pure bloodline for His son to be born into. When Satan beguiled Eve, and brought forth Cain, (Satan's son,), he then killed his brother, Abel, who was of Adam, the pure line. Satan's plan was to foil God's plan. He didn't want the Messiah to be born, and Satan was out to do anything he could to ruin God's plan :)

Personally I believe that Adam and Eve were made up as a way to start religion and as a nice little opener for the rest of the bible I think it is more plausible to think that once the planet came about from the primordial soup it became inhabited by beings from other dimensions or planets, We all know what happens when there is too much interbreeding thats where we got our village idiots from,,eeeerrrrr

Genesis 5:4 tells us that Adam and Eve "begat sons and daughters." Adam and Eve did have many children.

Therefore, brothers must have married sisters at the beginning. Remember that the law against close intermarriage was not given until the time of Moses—e.g. "none of you shall approach to any that is near of kin to him" (Leviticus 18:6). There was nothing wrong with brother and sister marriages, originally. If you think about it, that is the only way to populate the world, starting with only one pair. Notice that Abraham married his half sister with no condemnation from God, even though this was later forbidden.

Also, as Adam and Eve were created perfect, their genes would have been perfect. As the curse God placed upon creation started to operate only after they sinned, their descendants would not have had many mistakes in their genes. These mistakes (harmful mutations) add up only after a long period of time.

So brothers and sisters (Adam and Eve's children) could have married and not had the problems of deformities in their offspring as might well happen today, if such close relatives married and had children. This is because today humans have lots of mistakes—because of the curse—in their genes. This may cause problems when matching pairs are inherited from both parents, as is much more likely with close intermarriage.

There is a very cryptic statement that Cain went off and married into a people who lived in the area shortly after murdering Abel.
Where did these people come from? I think it indicates that Adam and Eve were not the first people on the planet, but that maybe they were the first to be specially gifted with a conscience, soul or spirit - whatever you want to call it. Maybe Cain marrying into that group gave them the "God" genes too, so they were no longer some kind of caveman, but true human beings.
PS: You won't get a straight answer from any priest about this. It's one of the most glaring inconsistencies in the Bible.

basically yes it would be incest - the same would apply when lot and his wife and daughters left the city ( his wife was apparently turned to a pillar of salt ) he then got drunk and had 'relations' with his daughters .
also when the Jews were led into the promised land they wiped out completely some of the communities that lived there down to the last child - it was genocide - just because you use god as the excuse it doesn't mean it was okay to commit such acts.

the problem of course is we still see terrible things done today 'in the name of god' or 'because god wills it' - i think it's about time all religions were banned for the sake of humanity.
what you choose to believe in the privacy of your own home is one thing but when it spills over into society it eventually destroys it.

good question have a star

Incest was not an issue at that time, because there was no genetic load. Faults in offspring caused by inbreeding are the result of harmful mutations (genetic copying mistakes).
These were the first people, so there were no harmful mutations in their gene pool, because these are accrued over a period of time, i.e. many hundreds/thousands of years.

Incest only became an issue when sufficient mutations had built up in the human gene pool to cause congenital faults. When it became potentially harmful to offspring, it was then outlawed by God. That is why the law against incest appears much later in the Bible.
