I am reading the text and it is not obvious to me. Was it because of their pride, or sinful nature?

After the flood, God gave Noah a command.
Genesis 9:1 "God went on to bless Noah and to say:
“Be fruitful and become many and fill the earth."
Fill the earth. Move out. Move on. Don't congregate.
For approximately 3 generations, this habit continued.
Then Genesis 11:2 tells us:
"....in their journeying eastward they eventually discovered a valley plain in the land of Shi′nar, and they took up dwelling there.  And they began to say, each one to the other: “Come on! Let us build ourselves a city and also a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a celebrated name for ourselves, for fear we may be scattered over all the surface of the earth.”
For fear we may be scattered!
They wished to go against God's command.
They knew it was rebellion because the tower's purpose was to protect some IF God should ever make it rain again.
Some could run inside and up.
God chose an ingenious method of accomplishing his will.
He confused the languages.
They separated. Genesis 11 adds:
"Accordingly God scattered them from there over all the surface of the earth, and they gradually left off building the city."

human beings are defying God and attempting to be his equivalent. A tower is being equipped possibly to safeguard against a flood, or possibly to chanced on a city which nomadic human beings concept a evil venture. all the thoughts of the 1st 11 chapters of Genesis handle defiance of God. the point of the thoughts is that following Gods methods brings stable and defying his methods brings concern. that is that straightforward. the modern view of non-public independence and autonomy conflicts with the Biblical concept of reliance on God and achieving stable by doing issues his way. The genesis tale is a extra direct God vs. human beings back and forth. that is to coach that salvation, a redemption of human beings, a returning to the wholeness of human beings in a courting with God that is "perfect". After that is commonly used that there is a rift interior the courting between human beings and God, we see how that is being repaired commencing with Abraham. we can assessment his courting with the builders of the tower.

The decision to build a tower and a city had implications of false religion. They wanted to immortalize themselves in history and stay in one place to worship in their own manner. This was contrary to God's command to be fruitful and fill the earth. By confusing their languages, God made it impossible for them to work together.

Both. God told man to spread to the far corners of the earth, and they gathered at the tower. They basicly ignored God and did what they wanted themselves, so as "punishment" he made them all speak different languages. This caused them to find others like themselves and move off to different corners of the earth. Get it?
