Do you actually think it legitimizes the answer. No one on this forum can check or verify lineage. does a 9th, 8th , 7th dan really make a difference on the web? All in all, are these bragers really what they say they are? if so, should i start making up junk to add to my answers so that i might sound better than the other fool with all that experiance...... ;)

Don't freak out people, this question is due to all the off the wall claims. I personally have trained for years and have used my training in field experiance. I know how long it takes to master an art, And from some of the claims out their i find it hard to believe. for example i saw one with a 9th in one art, 8th in a second, and 7th in a third art. This amount of acomplishment is obsured..... and cracker jack prize sounding.

He does have a point anyone with legitimate 7th dan in one art and 8th and 9th in 2 others would be so old he wouldn't be to frail to operate a keyboard.

Rank after 5th dan isn't based so much on increased skill but years of contributions in promoting the martial arts .

If you look at 25 to 40 years to reach 5th dan and 10 years for each level after that you should be looking at someone 65 to 90 years old to be a legitimate 8th dan if he started at 10 years of age.And that's if he sticks to one art .

People who get ranked by jumping to this association and that association have what is known as "political" ranks and not much respect from those who worked for their rank.

its listing credentials like stating above. but its true you cant really check to see if the person is telling the truth or lying you dont know the person.

you're more likely to take the answer they give to heart on a subject if they actually trained in that art oppose to they're just a fan, or have speculations.

you can usually tell whether someone is just blowing smoke though. yesterday someone here said they were a professional BLACK BELT muay thai fighter for many years and that muay thai is USELESS in a street fight. sounds extremely fishy to me.

after being here for a while you see which people are legit(or at least seem legit) they usually have not just top contributors(u can get that just by answering a bunch of questions with chuck norris) but have a pretty good standing as far a best answers(sometimes you have to watch that too because if a question goes to votes some people have multiple accounts and vote for themselves), and the stuff that they say just make sense as a whole.

Well it is the internet, people can say what they want. Some people do it so that they can tell you where they are coming from.

Not that it matters, but someone asking for advice on say, Judo. Well along with the 10 answers of people suggesting another art (the one they study) you will have 3 or 4 people who will actually answer with unfounded information, and maybe 2 people who actually know what they are talking about.

If I was to ask a question about an art I was just starting, I would want to hear from people who actually have experience in the art. So I would probably give more creedance to the guy who has in his Source: (5 years blah blah blah) then the guy who gave what seemed like weird advice and didn't have any source.

I put links to the information I am saying in my source sometimes, and other times I just put down things out of habit, such as 20+years Martial Arts. I have verified my experience with a few people on the board, especially those who have PM'd me and met up with me to learn or check out our gym.

Frankly to some people it matters, to others it doesn't. Plenty of answers on here list their brain as the source, or whatever. How much people pay attention to all that I don't know, I prefer my answer speak other than my source. I don't think it is bragging most of the time, most people who put it in there are usually because it bears some relevance to the question.

However I have seen people simply put some crazy *** rank in different Martial Arts on answers that have nothing to do with those arts, so I guess I see what you are saying.

Are you assuming that people are lying about their experience because that is what you would do, or because you are maybe jealous of their accomplishments?!? I do not recall listing my Martial Arts experience or belt level on my answer, but I assure you, had I done so, I can prove it if requested. Most people are proud of their accomplishments in any art or sport. It takes a lot of dedication and hard work to achieve a Dan grade in most Martial Arts, it is something to be proud of!

Well, it definitely gives your bias. If you're a competitive MMA guy or a san-dan in a traditional Japanese sword art, you'll have built in bias related to your experiences. I don't think people do this for any sort of benefit, after all there is no money involved in Yahoo Answers. More it's to say, 'I come at it from this angle, and this is what I think...'

Yeah I saw that too.. had to email the guy and ask him about it... because where I come from 9th degree is almost sacred.... more of an Honarary status to be considered the "most" respected... by those terms my kids might give me a 9th dan but I wouldnt post it on the internet... just seems silly to me... just for fun I am goin to claim to be a black belt in Muay Thai..

Let me see........

You became a member "Yesterday"
You have "0" best answers
You are level 1
You do not allow email
You do not allow IM
And you say,"should i start making up junk to add to my answers so that i might sound better than the other fool with all that experience"(only you misspelled "experience")

So people with experience are "Fools".......
Back in the day someone like you would be invited to dance...........("The Parking Lot Tango")............
Of course your kind never showed up.
Now-a-days your kind is not invited to dance.............
Why?.......You would run home and tell your Mom and she would call the cops & a Lawyer.

They're just listing their credentials. You always have the option to believe them or not. I'm sure some are being truthful and there are some that aren't.

Overall, if their advice rings true to you and others are agreeing with them (especially if those "others" have the credentials) maybe you should listen.

I do so because I saw others doing it and I figured it's just what is done here on this forum.

The truth is, you can tell who is who from the quality and precision of their answers.

You can also tell who learned from Bruce Lee books.

you can say what ever you want on the internet but if they are telling the truth then the ranking does give them higher credibility when answering questions
