I'm training for a half marathon and I always use an MP3 player...the music really gets me through my runs. But I'm pretty sure they are not permitted on the course I'm running. Is this going to majorly affect my run on race day? Has anyone else trained with an MP3 player and then ran a half/full marathon without it? How'd you do? I'm assuming the race will be at least a little more entertaining than just running circles in my neighborhood.

I train with my MP3 and recently ran the 1/2 marathon I've been training for. I actually started out the race with my MP3 player and took it off and handed it to a friend on the sidelines 1/4 of the way through, b/c I wanted to hear/know what was going on around me. There were times where I wanted it, but right as I got to that point something came up to get me focused again. I've been in a few races where they'll say no MP3's but won't enforce it b/c they know so many people use them. You can probably email the race director and ask them. Good luck, just have fun.

Have you never run in a race before? and a 1/2 marathon is your first? If so, that's awesome! I understand what you mean about being accustomed to running with music. I've run races without it and I did okay, I was just a little more aware of my pain, which is not good. I did run the Hood to Coast Relay in Oregon last year and ran one of my legs of the race at 3:00 a.m. and I had my MP3 player and it's the only thing that got me through. I'm assuming you can run your race with it, I've run many of my races with one. I would always be cautious and keep one ear bud out. Yes, train with your music and run with it, if for any reason you can't have it, your addrenaline and training will help you through. Worst case scenario, you could just sing your way through :) lol!

I know the USATF has been the use of such devices in races. The obvious tip would be, if you have any hopes of winning anything, leave it at home. A little practice without it would be a good idea.

If you are like me, though, headphones help pass the time and supply a little motivation. I ran a 15K race a few weeks ago, and the music helped push me along a little. Of course, I made a mistake with my playlist, and finished with Simon & Garfunkel in the final few tenths of a mile. In a big half-marathon, you aren't likely to get many complaints from anyone if you are back in the pack.

I run all of my runs with my trusty Ipod (especially since it keeps track of distance/pace/etc.) and have done both of my marathons and all of my half marathons (3) without it. The race is MUCH more interesting, and you get into the race zone without needing the music. The huge bonus in races that you don't have running in training is that there is almost always someone around you (especially if it is a course that doesn't allow headphones...those tend to be the more crowded ones!)

Good Luck on your race!

I don't really think if you are running in an organized race like this that you need one the races either have thousands of people or music blasting constantly to keep you going but also unless stated MP3 are never a problem

Most races have given up not allowing them during a race, but hide the ear phones in your shirt and after the start bring it out. There will be plenty to watch during the race and it will be OK without it, but I run with my tunes, with a certain play list I keep with my pace. It should be posted on the website or brochure if MP3 players are not allowed

yo man i run too. my music always gets me pumped but what also get me pumped is what i think about while i run sometimes its the lyrics sometimes its the whole world is about to explode and i have to run to the power plant to stop it. ( i digress) what im saying is it's only going to affect you as much as let it if you show up sour then thats gonna affect your whole mood and you won't be able to focus. so just focus on running and you'll be alright. and i think you'll be able to run with an mp3 player... just call ahead and ask. train hard
