You can open an account with the Commonwealth Bank, and do an international wire transfer which is a one off fee instead of paying every time you hit the ATM because you'll get international visa fees as well as conversion fees.

After arriving in Australia first you have to open an account in a bank. You will need your passport and some other documents. Depending on your purpose of stay different type of accounts can be opened. Then Electronic Transfer the money from your account in the UK. But you will have to know the Swift Number and BSB Number of both the branches of your banks in Australia and the United Kingdom.

when you arrive in australia you can open a bank account - at say the ANZ bank. you can then open an internet banking account and transfer money from u.k. bank to anz bank. (you must set this up first with your u.k. bank)
however - by far the easiest is to just use your card at an ATM machine and withdraw cash - there is a pretty hefty fee for doing so - each time. if you want to do it that way - set up an internet account before you leave the u.k, so you can transfer funds from one account to the one linked to the card. also to keep track of withdrawals.
if you open a bank account in australia - they may require you to show a tax file number - tfn - for australia. you would need that anyhow if you are in australia on a working holiday visa.

Ask your bank if their card works in Australia. If it does, leave everything as is. If it doesn't, ask your bank to transfer the funds to one of the Australian banks. It really doesn't matter which one.

ATM card - that is what I use.

OZ has ATM's everwhere.

Bank fees are two high and if you transfer more than 10,000 you will send up a red flag at the tax dept.
