The Ipod in China is actually more expenisve then if you were to buy it here in the US. My 8GB 2nd generation Ipod Nano is about $250 here. In China, the same Ipod would cost around $300 converted from RMB. It's way more expensive because it's the real thing. This product is made for US consumers, but instead of being shipped to the US, the product stays in China and sells for a much higher price. Plus, they don't have as much colors or hard drive space to choose from as in the US. Unless you go to an official Apple store in major cities like Beijing or Shanghai, you can only find 2 or 4GB nanos or shuffles in a few colors.
Most people don't want to spend that much money on something that small. With $300, they can eat for about 2 months. In major cities like Shanghai, you'll find young people there with Ipods, but they are the older generations.

No, iPods are not popular. Too expensive.
There are many kinds of MP3 and MP4 players sold in China, made in China, Korea, Japan, and Singapore. Chinese consumers like those players with a lot of features. They are willing to sacrifice storage space for a lower price. So the majority of those potable players have hundreds of features, colorful, a small storage space like 2GB, and cost several hundreds of RMB (1 USD = 7.x RMB) each.
iPod is the opposite: expensive and not many features (before iPod Touch).
Because iPods are not popular, people do not fake those in China.
