Either God wants to abolish evil, and cannot; or he can, but does not want to.
If he wants to, but cannot, he is impotent. If he can, but does not want to, he is wicked.
If God can abolish evil, and God really wants to do it, why is there evil in the world?

Evil is the total absence of God. He never created it, He cannot destroy it either without destroying all of us, because we all have a bit of evil somewhere within our hearts. I prefer to wait for the Last Day when all evil will be wiped out not by our death but Jesus's return and redemption than die now.
Evil is a verb, not a noun - God cannot destroy a verb. Think about it! And I loved your question!

I always figured that the explanation is that God is just a bit of a prick.
"Okay, so there's evil in the world, right? But now get this: only one religion is the right one, and I'm going to give you hundreds to pick from. Choose the wrong one, and something nasty happens. If I'm really omnipotent I could have stopped Lucifer, but screw that."

Why does evil have to exist in order to have free will?
I strongly believe that if a god existed that he would not have come up with such an awful way to have people freely choose him.

God is light; why are you classifying God to be evil? There's no darkness around God.

So, because God doesn't do what YOU want Him to do it is wrong. . .
Perhaps evil is just Gods way of allowing us to do good things for people.

you want to be a puppet controlled 24/7? For God to get rid of sin he would have to take free will away. Or should he controll everyone but you? You want freedom without consequence.
