I think ADD/ADHD is the body reacting to a generation
of people who are responding to a family/culture shift

The school is longer, classes are longer a day
(7 instead of traditional 3)

sport figures are Gods, and your a nobody if you don't play
sports, or cheer for the "Gods"

Cheerleaders are drinking/on drugs
Could this be because all that time on who's popular
isn't all it's cracked up to be?

Remember when there was no ADHD
you know
when people had time for each other, and we could
just breath, sip tea, and TALK to each other?
Now, everyone wants to put out fires

time management is a JOKE
I'm glad women have a choice to work now, and I have been single, and I know how hard that it to be a single parent, but
should we really work if we don't have too when our kids are young?

i think hispanic people have the right idea
at least they are home with their
kids when they are young, even if some do live off the system

Their kids = nurtured OURS = daycare

It only takes one to get it done but it takes two to get it right.

I don't agree ADD and ADHD are caused by this but I do agree with everything else.

Our lifestyles are a frantic mess and most can't even see it.

Women work because they want to more than because they have to and i think it effect the kids. There is NO mother that can do it all and to say you are is lying to yourself. This is not just women men are to blame too. A family needs a father around to help with the kids. It only takes one to get it done but it takes two to get it right.

If you give to your work you take from your family. There are only so many hours during a day and where you spend your time is the indicator as to what is important to you.

Mothers drop their kids off for 10 hours a day at a daycare. When they pick them up in the afternoon they have enough time to feed them, watch a TV show and get them ready for bed.

Their child’s waking hour are at the day care and 2-3 with mom; who is raising the kids? Daycare or Mom?

I believe other cultures do have it right. Family is still first where if you ask people today what is the most important thing it is usually education, a job and making money. family and a social life are near the bottom of the list.

I think a mothers interaction and time with here kids is more important than having two fancy cars.

Traditional values have many benefits that promote family and child development and social skills.

I agree that society and our current ways of living can take some part in the increased diagnosis of ADHD. However, to completly deny the physiology behind ADHD would be rediculous. You stated, "remember when there was no ADHD"... Well, there was no ADHD because the medical field had not yet recognized ADHD as a disorder. This does not mean that ADHD did not exist. You are making a mistake in assuming that. True, ADHD is probably over diagnosed. However, there are also thousands of children and adults that truly do suffer from the disorder.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is caused by an imbalance of neurotransmitters in the brain, especially dopamine. The right front cortex of the brain (if I remember correctly) is responsible for governing other areas of the brain and keeping them from becoming overstimulated, and this area is particularly rich in dopamine. Therefore, when a person has a shortage of dopamine, areas of the brain which are normally quieted by the right front cortex are not quieted properly and they fire inappropriately, causing symptoms such as inattention and hyperactivity. This is why stimulant medications are effective for ADHD; they stimulate the production of dopamine, bringing the right front cortex to a more normal level.

As for the busy-ness of our lives, I completely agree with you that people should be spending more time with their families and less time running around.

As for why people were not diagnosed with ADHD before -- we know a lot more now about medicine and neuroscience than we did before. Surely people had this disorder before, but we just weren't able to recognize it until now.

You have a point that our lifestyles have changed drastically through the generations. But I disagree with your assessment of ADHD/ADD. "Back when there was no ADHD" there really was. It just wasn't identified as such. Many of these children were often diagnosed as mentally retarded, mentally ill or as severe discipline problems. They were institutionalized, rather than treated with behavior therapies and medication.

Here's some quick info on the ADHD/ADD:

The exact cause of ADHD is not known, although researchers continue to study the brain for clues. They suspect that there are several factors that may contribute to the condition, including:

- Heredity: The fact that ADHD tends to run in families suggests that children may inherit a tendency to develop ADHD from their parents.
- Chemical imbalance: Experts believe an imbalance of the chemicals that help nerve cells in the brain communicate with each other, called neurotransmitters, may be a factor in the development of symptoms.
- Brain changes: Areas of the brain that control attention are less active in children with ADHD than in children without the disorder.

The following are other factors that may contribute to the development of ADHD or that may trigger symptoms:

- Poor nutrition, infections and substance abuse (including cigarette and alcohol use) during pregnancy may be contributing factors, since they can affect the development of the baby's brain.
- Exposure to toxins, such as lead, in early childhood can also affect brain development.
- Injury to the brain or a brain disorder.

Ok, first off, all the illegals should go back to their country and stop living off are system. They would do the same watching their kids if they lived in ******* mexico. ADD and ADHD is not being lazy dumbass. It's a problem with a part of the brain not being able to produce a chemical. Also I would like to point out, not everyone dumps their kids off at a ******* daycare. Their are good people in the country and your just to ******* ignorant to see them. I agree with the top part about sports and drugs and stuff but the other stuff is just showing you as a close minded ignorant fool.

I think is because kids are spoiled. When I was in school if I talked back I got a smack- so I didn't do it anymore. If I didn't to my school work and my parents found out, I got a smack, so I did my homework. My brain was wired - do your school work, don't talk back, be respectful or you get hit. Very simple cause and effect. People are no longer allowed to punish children. If you smack them now, it's physical abuse, if you yell at them it's verbal abuse. If you send them to bed without supper it's Neglect, and if you tell them they're doing something wrong it's emotional abuse.
Chidren sing I am special instead of Frera Jacka. They're rewarded for mediocrity and taught that everyone's special in their own way.
What every happened to rewards for good behavior and punishment for bad behavior.
If a teen skips class they get 2 days off school. How is that a punishment? If a 9 year old beats up a 4 year old you can't smack them, that would be abuse - give me a break!
