In the early days, items with numeric pads, such as caculators and adding machines were used almost exclusively by accountants and the like. Since they had to perform a lot of caculations fast, most learned a method of using the keypad without looking at it. The dot was added as a reference point, so you could identify the 5 key by touch. I believe this method is still taught in typing classes.

Well, That is to help Blind people to dial a phone, They can easily find out the key with a dot on it and that is key 5, now all other numbers are arranged around it. So with a little practice they can use this keypad.

5 is in the middle - and this is a way for you to type and not look at the numbers - move your finger to the 5 and you know where all the other keys are.

Its kinda like brail for blind people or if you type without looking. Try closing your eyes and place your finger on the # 5. Then try typing your birthdate. The raised dot allows you to have a guide to feel what nuber you are going to type next.

This is an accessibility feature. This shows the user where the middle of the telephone keypad is.

It is there for the same reason keyboards have a small raised bar on the "F" and "J" keys - to give you an indication of where you are on the keyboard/keypad.
