To encourage communication between yourself and subordinates is easily done by interaction with the subordinates. Always insure subordinates feel comfortable with your genuine care and concern for their welfare which will insure your "open door" policy is a good offer.

To maintain the same communication with upper management, a supervisor must be able to utilize his communicative skills to convey the concerns of subordinates.

1. In very basic terms explain your philosophy on management. Mine is that I believe the supervisor should work to keep problems and other people away from mine so my people can do thier work. I will be their shield and hopefully they won't make me regret it.

2. Be as open and honest as you can. Do NOT tell one person one thing and someone else something else.

3. Do NOT under ANY CIRCUMSTANCE belittle anyone when others are around to see or hear it. WE are all adults. If you have to issue a reprimand then do so as privately as is reasonable.

4. Always give people credit when they come up with new ideas. They will trust you more and as the suprvisor you will get enough credit in that your people are producing better and having new and better ideas.

Simple, use team approach methods to solve problems, give subordinates the ability to give input on decisions by asking them to review and comment on various policies. Reduce physical barriers, such as office walls and have a common room that could be used for private talks, if needed. Treat subordinates as if each one is a specialist in a certain area and use his knowledge in that area. FEEBACK, if a subordinate does something right or innovative, let him know and reward. If that person does something wrong, explain what was done wrong, and if minor give that person a chance to correct it. And remember, you as a boss, should be a coach, not a dictator, delegate and trust
