Most developing nations use older aircraft, as new fighter jets are much too expense. A multi-purpose aircraft like the F-16 might be a good choice, but still pricey.
South Africa's most recent purpose of a jet fighter was the Swedish Saab Grippen.
BTW. clamback... The Swiss fly the American F/A-18, brought from that country that is "slipping fast."

That would depend. What is the nature of the threat and how much money do you have? If the nature is such that you can't afford the defense, you have to think of the possibility of forming an alliance. Like Taiwan and USA. There is no way Taiwan could hold off an assault by China. So they cozy up to the US. Other countries have the $$$, but spend it on less technical weapons and rely on numbers, Iraq and Iran. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Or you could go to the UN and ask for help. There is a lot more to it than just buying an advanced jet. You have to have the facilities to keep them, and the personnel trained to fix and fly them.

If you are planning to start a war with your neighbors go with either MiG-29 or older soviet aircraft. If you start a war the odds are good that the UN and the US will cut you off from military aid. In that case there are a lot more soviet aircraft parts either on the black market, or can be bought from countries outside the UN fold, like North Korea.
If you are not planning to go to war choice the F-15. They are good for both air to ground and air to air fighting. You can get parts easily from the US and allied nations.

Why is no one answering the question?
F-16. Cheap, reliable, and more than proven in combat. After that, F-15. A good investment as well would probably be the new F-35 when it goes into production.

None, I would establish a militia like Switzerland, declare my country neutral, get it to be one of the richest in the world and laugh about military obsessed countries.
GDP per Capita:
Number one in the world - Switzerland
Numero 19 and slipping fast - USA

I would go with the f-22 raptor. it is radar evading and will go out of production by next year so the prices will be much cheaper.
