Social Security Credit?

Hello there, one of my co-worker asking me about SS credit that you earn each year. The max credit you could earn within a year is four points, and you can have max of 40 points for your entire life.

We are wondering how are the points accumlate toward each individual? Does it base on how much you make in a year or how much you pay your tax, or the age?

You earn 4 points a year if you work. SSA.GOV has all the information.
