why are people against it?

First of all, because it's unnecessary. MILLIONS of viable stem cells are thrown away every day in every hospital that has a maternity ward -- umbilical cords are full of them. They are free for the taking and there is absolutely no ethical problem with using them.

Second of all, because embryonic stem cell research has yielded exactly NOTHING in terms of viable therapies, whereas the research done on umbilical cord blood stem cells and so-called "adult" stem cells has already produced real treatment protocols that do real good for real people with real medical conditions. Embryonic stem cell research is years, if not decades away from producing any treatment. Why waste our time on that when we have other options that are already proving to work?

Thirdly, human embryos are human beings with unique DNA codes. They should be treated with dignity, not frozen, dismembered, mutilated and murdered for the sake of medical research that has not produced one single viable cure for any condition.

Some oppose stem cell reseach because they don't believe it will lead to any viable treatment. This belief is being invalidated every day by the research that actually is allowed around the world. Others generally oppose embryonic stem cell research because they believe the destruction of a human life is required and that embryos are ensouled at the moment of conception. These beliefs are generally religion in nature and origin.

Stem cells are obtained from blastocysts that are under a week old and consist of about 100 to 150 cells. For comparision there is roughly 100,000 cells in the brain of a fly.

Currently there is no evidence that supports the soul hypothesis and more and more evidence supports the theory that consciousness is a function of the brain.

First off, they need to get religion out of the Legislature! Religion is creeping into many areas of our government where it does not belong!
Many good things could come from stem-cell research!
They do not stop to think how many lives could be saved, or changed dramatically because of the cures, or the benefits!
They are scared to death that someone 'might' try to clone a human being!
Can you imagine the wonder, if they could regrow damaged muscles, and fix crippling injuries? What about brain disorders?
Think of how many families have loved ones suffering from Parkinson's, or Alttzheimer's, or any other number of horrific diseases that could be helped or cured by stem-cell research!
Stupidity, and ignorance is a frightening thing! When they incorporate that into politics, it is even worse!

1. some people object to human life, even in the embryonic stage, to be created only to be destroyed. they find it immoral.

2. for others, it isn't a matter of opposing the research, but rather who pays for it. In other words, they oppose federal tax dollars being given to private companies to do research that may ultimately bring a profit to those companies via the drugs and treatments developed at excessive costs to the consumer. this is then a case of double taxation. If private-sector firms, or even public universities, want to do this research, there is plenty of funding available in the private sector.

They're confused over the extraction methods, thinking that doctors are taking the stem cells from aborted fetuses. And because abortion is against their particular religion, they think the entire scientific process should be blocked.

Stem cells can be drawn from chord blood, and probably several other sources that I don't know about.

I'm not sure why the fundies are wanting to block potential cures that could bring improved life for all of us while we're here on this planet for such a brief time.

Opposers of this research are, mostly, pro-life supporters. They do not believe it to be Biblically sound to use an embryo, which they consider a human life, for research. It seems a bit strange to me also. I can't imagine donating embryos for research. My personal opinion is that, in a sense, it's playing God. Everyone has their own opinions, but that is the general reasoning for opposition. However, umbilical cord blood is also an excellent source for research on stem cells. I don't understand why the basis of the research hasn't been focused on this rich blood instead of embryos. It just seems to make much better sense, and it also hushes nay-sayers. I know a lot of parents are banking their baby's cord blood these days, but I personally chose not to bank it. I would've gladly donated it for research.

They think we are messing with "god's plan"
I wonder how those views would change if embryonic stem cell research turns out to benefit them directly.

Because they have no idea what the benefits are.

Lack if education and looking at the gifts God gave us to work with are huge barriers to understanding the hope that stem cell research can give.

Because they're mentally stuck in the dark ages.

They enjoy having opinions on matters they don't know a damned thing about... then try to impose those opinions on the folks who actually DO know.

A life ends. is that right? If the person being murdered had a choice, do you think that they would say, yeah go ahead and end me, I don't care?
