Can you think of an inspiring charity project to propose to a university council? We are going to be organising various events and the benefits would go to a charity or be for a charitable purpose. Can you think of an especially inspirational and needed charity project?

Yes I can!

I volunteered in South Africa through a charity called Be More.
Be More provides support (financially through grants and personally through volunteers) to 7 grass-root organizations in South Africa-orphanages, hospices, treatment centres for HIV/AIDS patients, an abused child rescue and advocacy organization.

Donations to Be More are used to support these 7 organizations to help them continue their amazing work in their small communities in South Africa.

How about a food drop off for homeless people?

In our community there's an ongoing event called Midnight Run. Volunteers meet in a church or temple kitchen and make dozens of brown paper bag meals of sandwiches (usually peanut butter), fruit and a soft drink. (Juice or water.) Then they go to the Grand Central Station area, where many homeless people are at night - and hand out the meals.

Some other ideas are:

Collecting gently worn coats for the homeless
Collecting pet supplies for the local animal shelter
Working in a local food pantry
Community Health Fair (so people without health insurance can get their blood pressure, eyesight, pulse rate, etc. checked and get information on health issues.)

This is such a broad question! Can you narrow it down? Are you looking for something international or local? Can it be anything or does it need to be related to something specific like the environment, human rights, etc? Something that is inspiring to me may not be inspiring to you!

gbcopy had some great ideas for charitable causes within your own community. Of course global warming is huge right now. There are many endangered species and depending on where you live there are likely a couple that reside in your area. The on-going genocide in Darfur is of huge importance right now - check out Amnesty International's "Instant Karma" page for more information on that.

Speaking of AI, they have loads of great ideas for fundraising and specific causes on their website. Check that out for more ideas.

Pick out a needy community and adopt them for a month, go door to door, check on the elderly, help with groceries, meds, lawn work, all kinds of things you can do if you have enough people in your group. You can litterly clean up a community.
