I got my first car 2 and half years ago and my grandfather cosigned with me. Since he was the main signer my tag expired on HIS birthday instead of mine. My grandfather passed away a year ago. He paid off my car and I had just been making payments to him every month. I've paid them off for it but I never got the title and my grandmother can't find it. I see on the DMV website about how to get a duplicate copy but I never had the original, and since my grandfather has passed I can't have him sign any of the papers with me. Any help would be great. My tag expired and I can't even drive my car. I really need to get this fixed asap but don't know where to start.

I live in North Carolina and my grandmother lives outside of Nashville, TN. It's not possible for her to come with me. Also, the car legally is mine, the tag is under my name, I paid all of the taxes, everything gets sent to me, I have all of the paperwork except the title. I know it sounds confusing...

The state you are applying for title in would be helpful You either used the wrong form or checked the wrong box Duplicate for title lost in transit is for title that was requested from dmv mailed but not received buy owner. You need a form for vehicle duplicate -Lost-Stolen-Damaged title and a fee will have to be paid

Take the expired tag to the DMV and they will help you, might be a good idea to take your grandmother with you and a copy of your grandfathers death certificate. Since he died it legally passes to you since you are the only living person on the title but your grandmother may need to be there.

Your Grandmother would have inherited the car. Ask her to go with you to the DMV and get a replacement title and after it is obtained, she can turn the car over to you by transferring it. Since it is immediate family, it may be considered a gift so no new taxes would need to be paid. Don't forget to take a copy of the death certificate with you.

E-mail them to see what your best course of action would be.
In our state, you would fill out a title form and pay the replacement fee. An executor of his property would sign in his place and include a copy of the death certificate.

Go to the nearest BMV(Bureau of Motor Vehicles). They will file a duplicate title request. If it is in your grandparent's name, the title will go to them first. Then, your grandmother will sign it over to you, so you will have to go back to the BMV.

Take the VIN number from the vehicle to the DMV. Start with that.
