I 've been wanting to get my navel pierced since I was 14 years old. I am now 21, and STILL want to get it done, but I'm too scared! It's NOT the pain I'm afraid of AS MUCH as it is I am BEYOND afraid of needles PERIOD. Blood, guts, all that stuff dosen't bother me at all, BUT needles TERRIFY me. I don't know why, I know it's dumb so please don't be mean about it, but if anyone could just share EVERYTHING you can think of about the experience in total. I want to know about the best place to go, if anyone's ever had it done at their dermatologist, what was that process like. Of course, how bad does it hurt really, any tips for stuff to use as far as pain management right before you have it done, creams, numbing tricks, ANYTHING. Also, a big concearn I have is I'd like to know what a "regular" scar will look like from getting it pierced. (where nothing goes terribly wrong, just what the scar looks like when you don't have the ring in.) PLEASE tell me all/anything you can! Thanks guys!

I got my belly button pierced when I was 18 and took it out a year later. I am 22 now and I don't have a scar, I still have the hole!! It never closed up but just enough so I can't put a ring back in.

About the process...
you can take one person in the room with you which is good to hold somebodys hand. They will hold the top of the belly button with a clamp and bring the skin away from the body. DONT look at the needle if you are afraid of them. They will peirce it quickly stick the needle in take it out and quickly insert the bar bell.
It will be sore and red for a couple of days. Try to keep anything from rubbing it. Take a bath with sea salt, this helps prevent infection.
Good luck!

The best advice I can give you is just don't look at the needle. I've had more than a dozen piercings and I NEVER look at the needle. Bring a friend to hold your hand. The worst of it lasts literally only a second, and it can be likened to a really hard pinching sensation.

They'll disinfect the area, then some places use a topical anesthetic (although it really doesn't help, it's more of a psychological thing), they'll put a dot where they're gonna pierce it, then clamp it, tell you to take a deep breath in, then out, and while you exhale, the needle goes in. Then they'll insert the jewelry, clean you up, and you're on your way.

I personally would recommend a ring for the initial piercing because it makes it easier to clean. You can get it changed to a curved barbell after it heals. As far as the scar when you take it out, you'll just have a little spot where the hole was.

It's really not that bad, I'd much rather get a piercing than get a shot or have blood drawn anyday, and it's so quick. You'll be in and out really fast. It will be sore for a few days, but that's to be expected.

Good luck! I hope you go through with it! I've had mine done for eight years now.

Honestly it doesnt hurt that much. I wouldn't even normally say that it hurts but then i'd be implying I felt nothing. What you feel is a pinch for 2 seconds. It might bleed a BIT but nothing crazy. I dont think you need anything for pain management. I have 2 navel piercings so it wasn't bad enough that i didnt want to get the second. And it's not really a scar when it's out it's just like tiny holes. And when you decide to take it out forever it would just eventually look like a tiny indention or something. You'll be fine. Also when you DO go, try not to be so scared and worried because usually tattoo/piercing places really don't like that and they might be sort of mean. so it's best to go in there and pretend you're not as scared as you are.

Ok ~ my advise to you is to not look at the needle. Tell the person who will be peircing your navel that you dont want to see the needle at all!
As far as the pain ~ there was a little pinch but it goes so fast that you dont really get much of it. Not a big deal.
My scar isn't bad. You can see two holes where the piercing was but nothing horrible.
And I would highly reccomend that you use a bar instead of a ring. My sister in law had a ring and hers stayed infected all the time. I used a bar and didn't have an ounce of trouble.
If you want it...Go for it!!

Ok well what they will use is a 14 gauge hollow needle and clamps to pierce you with. I dont think that you will be looking at it.

From 1-10 it is a 1. You will not feel it very much.

This piercing does have its own risk. There is: keloids, cyst bumps, gang green, and rejection. Dont wear belly shirts when you first get it it could get caught, and as well try not to get jewelry that hangs down as well.

It will take from 6-9 months to heal and if your body has a slow process it may take up to a year. Now to clean your belly button and jewelry use some warm water and some sea salt using a q-tip to make sure it is clean.

During the healing process you will notice some yellowish crusties, now that is normal it just means that it is healing well.

Now if it has puss take it out and clean it. Do not use alcohol at all, that will dry it out and make it crack and bleed.

hmmmm....i didn't know dermatologists were doing piercings. I went to a tattoo place. They usually have piercing services. The guy that did my navel piercing was pierced and tattooed in just about every possible place and he did all the piercings himself. There really wasn't like a stabbing pain. It was more of a pressure pain. I didn't have a scar from the piercing and I even kept my piercing in during 2 different pregnancies. I love my piercing and I think you should go for it.

I took a friend with me and was looking away the whole time... she had it done and i was still sitting there pratically breaking my friends hand holding it so tight... I didnt even feel anything. Not sure if thats normal... I do have high pain tolerance so who knows. Anyways its never gotton infected or anything... sometimes when I change out rings it'll get a little agrivated but it goes away pretty quickly. Anyways my advice to you is just go for it. It's not as bad as you think it'll be.... just dont look while you're getting it pierced and take a friend!!!

Yes, Listen to Country Girl, I got my belly done few years ago and I looked at what they were putting on me and I almost went crazy, breathe easy and keep calm, it doesnt hurt that bad, but it will the next few months. Leave the bar or hoop they put on you in for several weeks even a couple months, it has to heal first than you can play around with diff jewelry, I took mine out too soon and put a diff one in, it slowly started to work its way out of the hole and I had to take it out or it was going to fall out...it was too heavy of a bar too soon after I got it done was the problem. Just clean and twist it daily after you get it done....again, have someone there to hold your hand and DONT look at the needle.

There are risks, so know them going in. Beyond that, if you don't like it, you can always remove it. I knew a teen who had it done, totally scared of needles and pain, and she said that the anticipation was worse than the act.
