People are going to say Tavern on the Green, but be aware - it's a tourist trap and the food if average. You are paying to say you ate there only.

Daniel is good. So are Cipriani for Italian, Le Bernardin for incredible seafood.

Tavern on the green is always a good one they have lunch and pre-theatre menus, the atmosphere is nice nd the view of Central Park can not be beat. its inside the west 67th street entrance to the Park

I don't know how many stars it is but one really good restaruant is Safran....a veitnamese/french fusion place not too far from Union square.
