The fact you are here trying to solve the problem shows us you are a loving caring parent.
Solve the problem right here and now:
Headphones.
Every television is equipped with jacks in the back (and sometimes front) that allow headphones to be plugged in.
Visit a local store that specializes in electronics (in Canada its radio shack) and tell them the age of your TV, and your exact intentions.
We all have other responibilities and cannot give our children non-stop 1 on 1 attention. Doing so is unhealthy for the child. Teaching them independence and time alone is better for the child in the long run.

It definitely will not keep the child happy. There is a thing called volume control. I suggest you turn the tv down to a lower volume or get a small cheap tv for the child's room that he can watch with the volume where he can really hear it. Or, why don't the mother find a quiet room to sit in like a study room while the child is watching the tv. That is not discipline, it is cruelty. If the mother doesn't want to hear the tv, it would be better to encourage a different type of play that she can do with the child and leave the tv off. Try commuicating with the child while you are making cookies together or doing some dough art. Then both of you will grow happy together and bond instead of apart while one has attitude and the other is disappointed.

As one responder picked up on, they have to mute a lot of the live sound when contestants talk about other people in a negative way, and even when they mention products and brands, as to do this is either classed as advertising (say someone says they prefer Pepsi to Coke, this has to be muted) or could be taken as libel if stated in a negative way. Plus, the live show is never, ever live, it is always at least ten minutes behind real time as the shows editors watch the live content and then mute what they feel needs muted before it goes out "live". A con really.

Sounds like a very selfish mother to me...
Children are only suppose to watch short periods of TV at a time - so why can't you handle it for 30 minutes...
If you really hate TV that much don't turn it on - play with your child instead, read them a book, take them outside and play a game of ball, or take them to the park.

If the cartoon is that annoying, then you can tell your child that this particular show is not allowed at your house. Have the volume set really low, otherwise, but muted, there's no point. Don't let the child change the volume and if it's messed with, the show's done. Mom can go in another room while child watches the show at a low volume.

Well, I know I wouldn't much like to watch a show with no sound, so No, I don't think it's ok. I think the mother should make the child keep the sound down at a reasonable level (not annoying to mom, but just loud enough for child to hear it), or keep the tv off altogether for the moment.

uhmm. Why do you find the sound annoying ? Is this pertaining to all cartoon or a particular one ? Was it something about the cartoon you think they should not watch but you cannotbear to say no to them. Suggest you understand your inner reasons first , then will it help you to solve your questions on the child watching a cartoon.

I think it depends on the child personally. I have been around some kids that have been watching tv so low they can barely hear it anyway but them some have to have the vol on BLAST. I guess try it one time and see how your sone reacts. If he does have a major problem then try some headphones (but make sure you get some more upscale ones that have the real long cords so he is night right in front of the tv messing up his eyesight). Or you could put him in another room w/ the vol a bit lower.

Do you take all the batteries out of the child's toys, so you dont have to listen to them?? Taking the sound from a cartoon is pretty boring to a child. They love the talk and interaction that cartoons give them.
When your child grows up and goes to college you will say, man I wish I would have left the volume on when he/she was little just to hear that little laugh or when talking back to the cartoon char.
Either way just remember that a kid is a kid and they need to grow and learn like all of us. Cartoons these days are teaching kids alot of things. Like Dora teaches spanish.
Embrace everything that your child wants to do.If you dont like it wear head phones and listen to music while the cartoon is on.

No! How would you feel if you had to watch your favorite shows with the sound muted? If you can't stand the show then find another one. Try Sprout... lots of great educational shows on all day long. Get the child involved in something different, or put a tv in their room, so you don't have to hear it.
