Is leaving your critical thinking skills at the door a requirement of some religions?

Not all religions believe in hell. However, there might not be any of that as much as paradise. Fear of being forgotten makes humans believe they are eternal in some sence.

That's a pretty good way of putting it.

That's not a gift. That's extortion.
