how do you measure the square footage of a house IE.for insurance purposes or for outside painting?

It is on my property tax assessment from the county. I have heard of people measuring the outside perimeter for painting too.

Length x width= square footage

Measure the outside walls, as a rectangle.
Where there are offsets extending outwards, add, where there are insets, subtract.
To get living area, subtract the garage. Most are 20'X20'.
