My husband is in the AF reserve. He received an order to do a War Readiness Exercise in Keesler Mississippi. I asked him if my son & I can go with him but he said no, he might now be able to see us or even spend time with us if we all go because they are going to do the exercise at the Gulf Port in Mississippi. I still think that we could go and maybe stay somewhere within the area so that we could all be together. How does this exercise work?? How come he said that we cannot go with him? Can anyone tell me or give me some advise on this? Thanks!

Don't go. Since he's in the reserves, he'll be back soon before you know it. Just have some patience. I wouldn't want my family or friends visiting me while I'm involved in an exercise. The less distractions, the better I can simulate a real live situation, including the home sickness. He'll be better off if you don't go but it's up to you. I would take his advice.

I'm the wife of a retired marine (active duty) and I have to say that I agree with your husband. It's best that family do not go when their spouses get a temporary assignment. He is right in saying he might not even get a chance to see you. I don't know exactly how that job works, but your husband is going there for a reason and will be extremely busy. It's probably only for a short time. The best thing you can do for him is be supportive of times like this and just wait for the day when he comes home to see him again.

I'd guess that your husband is right on this one. I've sometimes followed my active Navy husband on temporary assignments but that's usually when he's been in schools and we've known he had a regular work day, then homework, then time for us. If your DH is going on an exercise that implies a more intensive training period. It may be that he's out in the field nearly 24/7 and doesn't stay close to "civilization" except for the day they arrive and the day they leave.

War readiness exercises are pretty intense, and I doubt he would have any time to devote to you. The exercises are geared to simulate the maximum number of scenarios that can happen and time is crunched to practice the obstacles faced the inspectors throw at you. Usually the area is secured, and only official visitors are allowed in. Off-duty time is scarce, and airmen are not usually allowed off the exercise area.
