You won't get any help from the booking sites as yet as they only book three months in advance. It is also likely that the train companies haven't issued their Christmas schedules as yet. However, as a rough guide work on the basis that there will be no trains on Christmas Day - there haven't been for many, many years and there is no reason why it will be any different this year. On Christmas Eve, services will begin to run down around mid-day. To be really safe, book your flight so as to arrive in London no later than about 10am on Christmas Eve. That's the best advice I can give at the moment, other than to wait until Tuesday next week and then try www.thetrainline.com

The UK rail network closes down in the middle of the evening (9-10 PM) on Christmas Eve and remains closed throughout Christmas Day and Boxing Day to reopen on December 27th. I believe there might be a limited service to/from Gatwick Airport but definately not London to Cardiff. There might be flights from Cardiff to London.
