"Support for suicide bombings and other violence against civilians dropped sharply in recent years in five Muslim countries, according to polls released Tuesday.

The 2007 Pew Global Attitudes Project survey found drops of more than half in Bangladesh, Indonesia, Lebanon and Pakistan since 2002. Support dropped by nearly half in Jordan and somewhat less than that in Tanzania and Nigeria. Turkey's change was within the margin of error.

Lebanon saw the steepest decline. Whereas 74 percent saw suicide bombings and other violence against civilians as a justified means of defending Islam in 2002, the number dropped to 34 percent this year.

The polling was done in April and May, either face to face or by phone. The margin of error was 2 to 4 percentage points, depending on the country.

"Muslim public opinion, as the result of increased suicide bombings, has come to realize the poisonous and murderous nature of this kind of attack," said Fawaz Gerges, a professor of Arab and Muslim politics at Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, N.Y."

Suicide-bombing is sinful in Islam. Firstly, self-infliction and suicide is prohibited. Those who commit suicide are not given the normal burial rites and are buried away from the normal cemetery.

Secondly, in Islam killing one innocent person is like killing a whole nation; meaning if one is not deterred from killing one innocent person then there can be no deterrence for such a killer to kill people in hundreds of thousands if able to do so - like by a use of atomic devices.

The tiny minority of the religious extremist elements in the Muslim countries distort the explicit meanings of the verses from the Qur'an to prod ignorant volunteers into committing such barbaric atrocities.

Imagine, suicide bombers mingling with the Muslim pilgrims who include women and children in Iraq to kill as many pilgrims in prayers as possible even in mosques. Some pilgrims come from other Muslim countries.

There are many more Muslims killed by the suicide bombers than non-Muslims.

With no support or sympathy from the Muslim masses, these killing of innocent civilians are bound to taper out.

It is incredibly disturbing that there is ANY support for this whatsoever!!! The real question is why has the support waned? Is it because more and more muslims have come to the conclusion that the tactic is evil to its core, or is it simply because it was causing more harm than perceived good? If the former, then there may be some hope. If the latter, then nothing substantive has changed...as we see in Gaza where dispatching suicide bombers has been replaced by rocket attacks.

The real fact is that muslims around the world have learned that these kinds of attacks bring destruction back on themselves many times over....as well as realizing that in the last 2-3 years, almost all suicide attacks have been muslims killing muslims.

Based on these polls and others, an estimated 10-15% of muslims around the world are willing to particpate in armed jihad against the west. That's 150-225 million who are willing to kill and be killed in the process. That's scary....real scary. And if there are 10-15% willing to take an active part....how many more are willing to support the effort in some fashion.

Suicide bombings are not the illness, merely a symptom. The illness is a philosophy steeped in religion that demands worldwide submission or death to the infidel.

Fundamental error in your logic...Hirohito wanted to surrender but the Japanese military who REALLY ruled Japan were determined to fight on. Hirohito was basically a figurehead. The military even tried to stage a coup against the Emperor in a last-ditch effort to continue the war. Hirohito was left in power because MacArthur (who had spent considerable time in Japan) realized that ousting the Emperor would make governing post-war Japan impossible. Researching a little real history would help you a lot.

Uhmm, I just think people are getting smart! Who wants to blow themselves up anymore? Besides, I think folks are realizing that their looney tunes leaders aren't volunteering to strap the bomb on themselves.

Yesterday there were a few questions saying that most muslims are all for suicide bombings ( although clearly the majority are not), i think the facts you outline here dismiss the rest. Thanks
