I think that the old wives tale telling you how many times to chew your food is physically impossible. How many times can you chew one bite of food?

Digestion starts with chewing and the saliva helping to break the food down. Something in the back of my mind seems to say I've heard something like we should chew 32 times. That would make my jaw sore! As long as the food goes down easily, I would hope that would be enough. Then the stomach can do it's thing.

Chew until it's broken down completely and easy to swallow.

The number of chews on a forkful of mashed potatoes is going to vary -- A LOT -- from a bite of steak, especially if it's not a good cut and has fat or grizzle. That stuff could be chewed and chewed til the sun goes down, and it still wouldn't be enough.

I just know you should chew and swallow before putting more food in your mouth. But watch... people just keep shoveling. I'm surprised there aren't more choking incidents.

You're supposed to chew your food until it disolves completely. Good luck. 2D
