Ive been watching this show regularly for the past few months now and it seems only two people i think have ever completed all the courses? Nagano and the crab fisherman guy i think. I've noticed that if you get past the first course it becomes more about upper body strength and the ability to hold yourself up. Do you think you have to be stronger in the upper body or be stronger in the lower body? Alot of these courses would seem to ask alot of your hands and forearms.

Indeed, only two people have ever completed the full course (and having never seen the first victory, but seeing the courses get gradually harder, I wonder if that first one should count anymore).

The first stage is mostly foot speed and agility. About half the events have some form of upper-body component, but it's generally just a short burst of strength needed. For the most part, being tall and muscular is an advantage. This stage is just to weed out the weak ones who likely wouldn't be fast enough for Stage 2.

The second stage is all about using your arms quickly. In some seasons, this stage has been very much against large competitors, while others, size isn't that much of a problem. The metal swing was just evil, as it requires ridiculous shoulder and pec strength.

Stage three is upper body endurance and grip strength. The lack of a timer completely shifts the focus away from speed when you are watching, but speed is key to not waste yourself in the early obstacles. This stage is very much in favor of smaller, thin people.

The Final Stage is more upper body strength and speed. Long arms (usually a tall person) would help a lot.

So yes, upper body is very important, but I would argue upper body endurance is more key than upper body strength.
