Google "volunteer" and the name of your city. Most cities have organizations or websites that post all the volunteer opportunities in your area. You can search by category, one-day or long-term opportunities, etc. I've volunteered in a soup kitchen for years (serving, not cooking) and also for Stream Keepers, Canada Tibet Committee, a children's hospice centre and a hospital, SPCA, amongst others. There are so many different organizations you can volunteer with.

Decide what you're interested in. What are you passionate about? AIDS or other health issues, kids, human rights, environment, animals, etc. That will help narrow it down a bit. Even museums and zoos or aquariums will take volunteers. There are so many options!

If there's an organization you're really interested in, you can email or phone to see if they accept volunteers. A lot of places are thankful for the extra help.

Nursing Homes and Hospitals usually welcome volunteers. Our Hospital even has a teen volunteer program. You might call and ask yours.

You could also check with your state department. They usually welcome volunteers to help with picking up trash, painting, etc. to improve your town's look.

I guess it all depends on the type of volunteer work you're looking to do. Think about that and start making calls to area businesses and see if they have any sort of volunteer program. The worst they can say is, 'no.'

Schools, hospitals, va clinics, nursing homes, food pantrys and abuse centers if you live in big city. Homeless shelters, soup kitchens, I currently work as a volunteer at a Hospital, very rewarding. Also if you go to church they are probably a lot of things you can do around there, lawn work, help clean the santuary, also I have heard of groups adopting the elderly and everday somebody goes by to check on them, you could a whole community.
