"There is little possibility of our having a COLD war with an Islamist regime armed with long-range nuclear weapons. A cold war requires that the parties be mutually deterred by the threat of death." Sam Harris in "The End of Faith"

I don't think Harris means to say a cold war is good, but only that it's preferrable to a hot war. And most of you caught the point: they not only don't fear death, they welcome it in the name of Jihad. Very, very scary.

Although, my Green Witch friend, I suspect you are not entirely serious in your proposal. I don't see any reason to accept a first strike: we already did that on 9/11/01.

I agree with the quote. The radical Islamics are on jihad which means that they DO NOT FEAR DEATH.
Not at all.
Death is a reward to them.
Plus, they believe that Allah has instructed them to destroy the 'infidel' (that's everyone BUT Islamics, BTW).

This quote seems to imply that it is almost "good" to have a COLD war.
Any kind of war is absurd at this age for humanity.
Most people irrespective of their religious beliefs are deterred by the threat of death.
Governments and manipulators of humanity are not deterred by the death of their people.

Yes I agree because the Islamist regime is not "deterred by the threat of death." They embrace death in war.

True, its kind of hard to have a Cold War when the sides are not equal.

But hey, it's not like the current folks in power want a world of equals.

The idea of "allowing" some extremist muslim group to nuke us so we can then feel justified in nuking Mecca and killing millions of folks who probably had nothing to do with us being nuked is more than a little "Right wing scary"

Sort of. The war right now is pretty hot....in Iraq, but that battle is winding down. So the war will be "cold" with hot little flare ups....hopefully the flare ups will not be with nukes or more terrorist acts.

One little problem... Islamist extremists are not deterred by the possibility of death. To them, dying while fighting the "infidels" is a sure ticket to paradise.

I think that we should give them a free shot at us. When they take it, we just sit quietly by and wait for the Haj. When a few million Muslims show up at Mecca, we drop a nuke right in their midst. the REST will eventualy die because they are BOUND by the tenets of their Faith to make a Pilgrimage there once in their lives. As they go to Mecca (Now heavily contaminated by nuclear radiation), they'll die too. Problem solved.

All we need to do is make that public knowledge beforehand and let the chips fall where they will. From there on out it's THEIR choice as to the outcome. When they realize that we WILL use what we can to stop them they'll suddenly find a new found love of life. That I can guarantee you.
